Should Games Be Remade?

By: James Stevenson
Date: Sunday, May 05, 2002

I've spent some time these past couple of days with a copy of RESIDENT EVIL for the GameCube. The remake of the original Playstation game brings along some of the best visuals to ever grace a console and is genuinely pretty creepy as well. But the game poses a very interesting question: should we remake games?

In Hollywood, remaking movies is common. Grab some stars and update a classic story for today's time. But rarely (if ever) have we seen a game remade. How much can you do differently in a game? Give it a facelift and maybe add some new items or enemies? What makes the game more than just a re-hash?

My mind was full of these questions as I dove into the familiar, yet unusual world of RESIDENT EVIL. I've been in this mansion before, but it's different this time. It's definitely as scary as the first time, but there are rooms, places and puzzles I don't remember. It is like watching a remake of a movie, familiar but different enough to make it seperate and individual.

RESIDENT EVIL may be just the beginning of game remakes. The game seems to be selling well (I have no proof except for local stores selling out, and pre-reserves not being fully met) and where there's money to be made, gamemakers will go. C'mon, who wouldn't buy a full remake of OCARINA OF TIME, or MARIO 64? That's what I thought.

ON SHELVES

TACTICS OGRE: THE KNIGHT OF LODIS: This strategy-RPG is definitely going to give Game Boy Advance owners plenty of playtime over the next few weeks. You can bet on the fact that this is the game we'll be playing on the flights out to L.A. come E3 time.
