Shyamalan on abortive INDIANA JONES 4 job
By: Christopher Allan Smith and Scott ColluraDate: Thursday, July 25, 2002
While talking to CINESCAPE's own Scott Collura about his upcoming alien film SIGNS, M. Night Shyamalan let us in on what exactly happened with his involvement with writing, or not writing, INDIANA JONES 4.
If you remember back, last year he was announced in the trades as the writer for the long delayed fourth chapter in the action/adventure series. Fans were excited. We were. Then came word he was working on SIGNS, and the project's search for yet another writer resumed.
What happened?
He confirmed he sat down, separately, with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford, and talked about writing the film.
"I was asked, but it didn't work out," Shyamalan said. "[It] didn't work out with everybody. It's a tricky, tricky thing to get four of us together at the same time on the same page. It was just a tricky time. I didn't think it was the right thing for me to do. I mean it was. That's the movie that above everything has affected me and RAIDERS [OF THE LOST ARK] was kind of like hey, fulfillment of a childhood fantasy to kind of say, 'God, I'll do that one and in a way childhood will be put aside,' and an amazing circle would have come. But, it didn't work out. Frank Darabont's doing it now."
Now you know.
