According to Variety, M. Night Shyamalan has broken from past traditions and will head back for rewrites on his latest script, The Green Effect.

Shyamalan, who previously had the clout to refuse to do rewrites on scripts, has accepted notes from the major studios and will rewrite with hopes to return in a month with a new title, cast, budget and script.

The plot has been said to hinge on a large-scale, cataclysmic environmental crisis that turns into a struggle by mankind to overcome nature.

If things go well and a studio picks up the script, Shyamalan will likely begin filming before he starts work on the fantasy adventure Avatar: The Last Airbender.

KJ's Take:  Good.  I think this is very good news, both for M. Night and for fans.

Look, the man can direct one hell of a movie and we've seen in the past that he can write a hell of a script.  Everyone gets a little too big sometimes, and maybe a little reality check will do him some good, bringing him down to earth just in time to make Airbender one of the best fantasy films this side of LOTR.  Oh yeah, that's how highly I'm anticipating Airbender.

I don't know anything about Avatar: The last Airbender. But I think it's silly to think that you can write a script the first time and think that you wouldn't have to do any rewrites. It's possible that M Night's head got a little too big like an over-ripened fruit. We all know what happens when fruit over-ripens. It starts to rot. Shyamalan's best work came when he was still green in the business. I guess this makes for a green effect as well don't it? Stay green, M Night Shyamalan. Don't go George Lucas on us.

Ya! Ya! Ya! Don't go George Lucas on us...Oh, too late... And we have another stupid statement from our man KJ..."bringing him down to earth just in time to make Airbender one of the best fantasy films this side of LOTR"....The damn movie has not even been made yet and your calling it one of the best fantasy films this side of LOTR! What, are you high man? And don't tell me your statement is based on the fact that M. Night is writing and directing it because if it is you have obviously missed his last few outings as a writer and director...Hay, but don't mind me. I know what your take is all about now, stupid statements and not valid opinions...

Err ... I think you things a bit mixed up there mla. The rewrites are concerning the film 'The Green Effect' not Airbender whose script hasn't even been started yet. I would be devastated if an Airbender script needed rewrites! But it won't, M. Night will make it a masterpiece ... watch. Like I said, it's going to be the best fantasy film we've seen since LOTR!!!

Karl..just about every script goes through rewrites, 2 sometimes even 3 times...And it was my mistake on the rewrite part of airbender...I have since fixed that thanks to the edit button...lol And how can you say it's going to be the best fantasy film since LOTR...Ive never seen the cartoon and can't speak for the content of the show itself but from what I have read it looks interesting, never the less that's like me saying I have read the RUNELORDS Series which are suppose to be made into movies and they will be the best fantasies films since Lord of the Rings but what would be my bases for such a statement? because there good fantasy novels? sure there good but will it translate the way it should from book to film? I don't know, unless the director has a killer track record, maybe I make such a statement...If your going by the director than that's fine but this particular director has proven with the last few projects that he has lost it and this script that he trying to pawn off onto the studios, I guess there saying wait a minute this is not the work were use to getting from you M. Night...Don't get me wrong I have enjoyed M. Nights work greatly but can't say that with the last two movies he has put out...I hope it does turn out to be a fantastic ride but it's to early to make statements such as "the best fantasy movie we have seen since LOTR"

I'm glad M. Night's been given a nice does of reality. Maybe having some air taken out of his sails will help him become a better director. I enjoyed his first couple of films a lot, but felt his last couple were made just to feed his seemingly growing ego. The guy's talented and i think that he's yet to deliver his best work. maybe being a little more grounded will give him the focus to concentrate on the story and not his Q rating.

mlaforcer-- Imagine a world where Episodes 1-3 had re-writes and different directors? Chris Nolan's episode 3. My take on this is, if you're spending someone else's money, you should do whatever they say: rewrite, rerewrite, switch directors, whatever.

Here's the latest...MNS is still one of the most overrated filmakers. Check back soon for more updates.

A.Scientist's take: however Shyamalan makes AIRBENDER, KJ will be disappointed. ("... this side of LORD OF THE RINGS" ? dude, ease up on the expectations...)

Would you all be excited if Chris Nolan was asked to rewrite TDK because of some idiot producer? Were you all excited when Raimi reportedly had to do reshoots for Spider-Man 3 because of test audience reactions? M Night has a pretty unique vision and style... I hate to think this will be compromised because some people didn't get Lady in the Water.

VerbalKent, I think most people *got* Lady in the Water. They just didn't like it.
