"Silent Hill 2" on the way

According to Christophe Gans in an interview with DVDRama, a sequel to the film Silent Hill is on the docket.
The interview was in French, here is part of the translation from joblo.com:
Gans is happy because Silent Hill is one of the biggest horror success of 2006 in terme of box-office. He arrives 3rd after Saw 3 and an american haunting.
One of his goals for Silent Hill 2 is to correct mistakes he made with the 1st one which cost him a lot of energy. However, he wonders if he can truly come back for a 2nd movie because of Onimusha. He says that if he doesn't come back, producers agree with him that the 2nd movie should keep the visual aspect of the 1st one. There is no way they are bringing a whole new vision of the town's design. He doesn't want a hollywoodian movie. If he doesn't come back as a director, he strongly suggest an European (and even a French) one. He will however stay close to this movie.
The first movie was a steaming pile of dog crap and I can only hope someone takes it upon themselves to slap any foolish movie executive who may greenlight and finance a sequel.

I suspect you'll take some flak for that comment - there were some on the message boards earlier this year who thought this was one of the best horror movies ever. Personally, I thought it was OK - not terribly engaging, but the creepy atmosphere and design of the ghosts (or whatever they were) made up for what it lacked in character and plot.
What I really don't get is Gan's belief that Silent Hill was the third biggest horror movie in terms of box office this year. Yes, Saw 3 was the biggest. But The Omen, Final Destination 3, and Hostel all made more box office than Silent Hill. And I have no idea where he gets the notion that An American Haunting was the second biggest horror movie - it's actually the second lowest grossing horror movie of the year, just edging out See No Evil.
