"Silent Hill 2" on the way

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Wednesday, December 27, 2006

According to Christophe Gans in an interview with DVDRama, a sequel to the film Silent Hill is on the docket.

The interview was in French, here is part of the translation from joblo.com:

Gans is happy because Silent Hill is one of the biggest horror success of 2006 in terme of box-office. He arrives 3rd after Saw 3 and an american haunting.

One of his goals for Silent Hill 2 is to correct mistakes he made with the 1st one which cost him a lot of energy. However, he wonders if he can truly come back for a 2nd movie because of Onimusha. He says that if he doesn't come back, producers agree with him that the 2nd movie should keep the visual aspect of the 1st one. There is no way they are bringing a whole new vision of the town's design. He doesn't want a hollywoodian movie. If he doesn't come back as a director, he strongly suggest an European (and even a French) one. He will however stay close to this movie.

The first movie was a steaming pile of dog crap and I can only hope someone takes it upon themselves to slap any foolish movie executive who may greenlight and finance a sequel.

Hey Karl - If you're going to add your own personal commentary at the end of the news articles, could you do something to set it off - maybe a line used as a divider, or a different font, or italicize it or something. I mean for a second - just a second - when I got to the "steaming pile of dog crap" bit, I thought it was still Gans talking about his own film.

I suspect you'll take some flak for that comment - there were some on the message boards earlier this year who thought this was one of the best horror movies ever. Personally, I thought it was OK - not terribly engaging, but the creepy atmosphere and design of the ghosts (or whatever they were) made up for what it lacked in character and plot.

What I really don't get is Gan's belief that Silent Hill was the third biggest horror movie in terms of box office this year. Yes, Saw 3 was the biggest. But The Omen, Final Destination 3, and Hostel all made more box office than Silent Hill. And I have no idea where he gets the notion that An American Haunting was the second biggest horror movie - it's actually the second lowest grossing horror movie of the year, just edging out See No Evil.

Silent Hill ruled ! The Critics can't help it if they don't know good material if it came up and bit them in the Arse !

I'll enjoy a Part II . Not much else going on in today's Cinema.

Shame on you, Karl. For a serious entertainment site like this, personal comments like this one just don't have a reason to exist.

Is possible, by any chance, that you meditate for a second and think that maybe for a LOT of people -like me- the movie was great, and result offensive to read your personal comments? C'mon, your job is cool. Don't destroy it with comments like this.

My personal comment (in the place that must exist) is that SH is the BEST videogame-to-movie ever created (you must be a real fan of the series to note this) and the numbers don't lie. If is the third horror movie of the year, is for a reason. I don't think that hundreds of moviemaniacs like me wish to pay for a "pile of dogcrap" (my god, what unprofessional!).

Yeah Karl you shouldn't say that, so I'll say it for you...SH was one of the worst movies I have ever seen calling it a steaming pile of crap is doing a disservice to steaming piles of crap. The only good thing was the filming, dark and moody, but the crap story ruined that. this POS put me to sleep immediately and I regret rewatching it to see what I missed. The only movie I have seen lately that is worse was Alone in the Dark. Personally, I enjoy your personal observations at the end of the story, but perhaps snallygaster is right, a line or different color to set it off would be ok.

I will try and start setting my comments apart Snallygaster, thanks for the input.

But as for the movie, it was trash. I absolutely hated it. To each his own, that's just my take.

I read a lot of reviews of this movie (I have not seen it). The vast majority of them found some elements that were likable but not enough to recommend the movie. Very few denigrated the entire production.

If you, Karl, are a journalist, that is what you should have reported. You shouldn't have needed a reader to point this out to you. But since you resorted to calling the film a "steaming pile of dog crap", I doubt you ever had a education in journalism that would have included a class in ethics. It's nice that you acknowledge this. So I will instead put the blame on your editor. Shame on them for publishing this. Sorry to be so harsh but I guess that is the state of modern yellow journalism and I will have to live with it. It's so *exxxxtreme* and in-your-face and that is sooooo kewl.

Oh yeah, since this was reported on DVDRama, should we assume the sequel will be direct to DVD... another classic...

Steaming Pile... Well, okay. It sounds like you were a fan of the SH setting and are a little bitter about the end productof the first film. I agree that it was not a good movie. It had great mood, setting and atmospehere but the story, pacing and acting sucked. Also, the lighting was so horrible that I had a hard time seeing what was going on at times. But even just having mood and atmosphere sadly makes a film better than most horror movies that have come out in recent years. An example would be The Descent. A great movie that relies on the mood and setting to facilitate the story.

However, it sounds like mood, settting and atmosphere are what is being kept from the first SH film. Hopefully, someone with skill will use that backdrop to tell a good story this time.

Wow, suprised to see a lot of people getting butt hurt by karl's comment. Keep on Karl! I guess they would have been okay with you posting your opinion if it was in favor of the film. There is nothing like criticism from fanboys. While I disagree with your comment and I believe movies, for the most part, aren't good or bad (they have good and bad qualities, except for those directed by Boll) it doesn't bother me that you have this opinion or that you have expressed it. Maybe, you could have burried sarcasm and condecending insults in your report.

As far as SH goes, I thought it looked good. Gans is very talented with establishing a sharp astethic in all of his films, Brotherhood of The Wolf was a beautiful film as well. The story, however, was a mess. It doesn't make sense. If the story isn't clear to the audience, including those with no experience with SH then that is a problem. The story is so ambiguous. I've talked to several people that loved the film and they each have a different explanation as to what happened.

"However, he wonders if he can truly come back for a 2nd movie because of Onimusha"

Onimusha! Now that's something I can get excited about. But honestly the pregame cgi movies were so bad ass I think they should make a feature in the same style. Forget live action.
