SIN CITY Rights Mystery Deepens

Weinsteins insist they hold them, while Miller's reps shop the property around

The mystery of the lost 'Sin City' sequel takes another turn today.

Regular readers will recall that, earlier this month, IESB.net reported that The Weinstein Company (TWC) had lost the film rights to 'Sin City' and the long-awaited sequel would likely now be made through a private equity group and distributed by Universal Pictures.

A day later, TWC attorney Bert Fields issued a public statement denying the rumors and stating, "TWC’s rights to produce sequels to Sin City remain intact as they always have been. Any suggestion to the contrary is complete hogwash."

Now, The Hollywood Reporter weighs in with their own report, confirming that the property is being shopped around. According to their report, unnamed producers have claimed that they've been approached by representatives for Frank Miller, who are looking to find a new home for the sequel, confirming parts of IESB's original report.

However, the Reporter also writes that TWC is continuing to claim that they hold the rights to make 'Sin City 2'. So what gives?

Speculation is that a "use it or lose it" clause may be in effect, with the rights contingent on a certain level of development activity on the part of TWC. If they've failed to hit certain check points, the rights may have reverted back to them.

Still, given the headaches of the recent 'Watchmen' brouhaha, any parties interested in the sequel are certainly going to tread carefully if TWC continues to assert their ownership rights.

What do you think, Maniacs? Are you still interested in SIN CITY 2? Post your comments below...

Jeezy Creezy, would SOMEBODY make this damned movie already? $190 mil WW gross vs a $40 mil budget for part 1...Thats profitable. Im really surprised by the lack of studio enthusiasm for this project.

I want the sequel also.Mainly cause I really enjoyed the stories in the comics and would love to see A Dame to Kill For in film.

However the novelty of the first film already wore off. I doubt a sequel will have that same level of success as the first as The Spirit proved.

I have to say that The Spirit didn't do well because, well, it sucked. It had a sloppy plot with over-the-top violence that wanted to be more like Eisner's bloodless approach to maintain that pg-13. It had potential but it wasn't a gritty noir experience like Sin City. The sequel would definitely be successful (talking SC not Spirit) and I believe that it could make it back in one weekend. Hell and Back would be a GREAT third film.

You would think that the profitability of the first one, combined with the prospect of Ms. Angelina in the second one, would have been more than enough to green light this project ages ago.

And Robert Rodriguez! You gotta have Robert Rodriguez direct if you're going to make SC2!
