Richard Attenborough (1923–2014)
Another great one has left us. This time a lord. Lord Richard Samuel Attenborough died Sunday at the age of 90. This sad news came from his son, via the BBC. Attenborough was both a thespian of the stage and screen as well as an accomplished director. He is probably best known to younger audiences as John Hammond from Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.
Attenborough won the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture for 1982’s Gandhi. Which, ironically enough, beat Steven Spielberg’s E.T. in numerous categories.
“I have no interest in being remembered as a great creative filmmaker,” he once said. “I want to be remembered as a storyteller.” - Attenborough
As a director he would helm Magic (1978), A Chorus Line (1985), Chaplin (1992) to just name a few. In front of the camera, outside of appearing in two Jurassic Park films, he was known for The Great Escape (1963), where he played “Big X”. He even played Kris Kringle in 1994 remake of a Miracle on 35th Street. His career was incredibly diverse and a true testament to his talent as a director and as an actor.
Mania’s thoughts and prayers go out to the Attenborough family.
