What no rating?! I just finished volume 3 and if volume 4 is as good as I have been reading, it'll be an "A" right?
The MSNBC is so grossly misinformed and any argument against it is pointless bceause it is so stupid The only thing that becomes clear is that the author of the MSNBC article is out to pimp his book and he's doing it in the most salacious way possible 'cause, well, sex sells. And he's going to be talking it up because it's money to him. He does not care about any reality. The guy cited Gurren Lagann and Legend of the Overfiend as the same type of "sexy" anime. Jawdroppingly stupid. And it doesn't stop there. That stupidity is what people should be talking about, not rising to the bait some a**hole wanna-be pop journalist setup.
I read a lot of manhwa. while I'm certainly no authority, I'd like to think I can get around a lot of the cultural references. The joke around the characters Korean names came off leaden. I give Yen credit for dealing with it at all, though they didn't really have much of a choice since it was such a big point in the book artwise. I'm not sure how Yen could have made it better though, I don't think it's particularly funny to begin with. Seems as if there's a cultural humor gap here.
it's nice to see that someone else liked Sumo5(or would it be 4?) Most reviewers just didn't get this. Someone actually called it a bad romantic comedy. well, true enough, 'cause it isn't a romantic comedy. And the art criticisms! Bad art, indeed. These people need to see FLCL, they might understand the visual shorthand. This was my highlight of the issue. That rant aside, I liked Pig Bride as much as you did, and One Fine Day, I think a lot more than you did. I wouldn't have considered Bamboo Blade the highlight of the magazine, it was just so-so for me. I'm probably one of the few who liked Jack Frost. Reviewers have tended to damn it because they think the young'uns will be reading (this is mature teen rated) or they use the excuse that it's derivative (looks like Hellsing -even has the gun). Most manga stories aren't terribly original, as with so much else, it's what you do with it. To me the Jack Frost section wasn't long enough to be able to say whether or not what it presented was plotless and that the "it was all a dream" was unjustified. Loved the visual style and I'll be reading it. Anthologies ae meant to be diverse and will never please everyone with all their offerings. Thanks for the thoughtful breakdown.

I'd like this figure.
