How old am I 12? Last night after Eureka I had to quickly switch my dvr over to the E3 preview show on G4. I watched all two hours and the Microsoft press conference after. I'm a die hard 360 player and the MS conference got me really excited about some amazing looking games on the way. Mass Effect, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, Asassin's Creed, and mmmmmmmm Resident Evil 5 all looked amazing. Most of all I can't wait for Halo 3. Yes I have a copy on hold at Gamestop on launch day. Sure, the Halo 3 graphics don't look quite as good as some other games but ti does look good and this will be the best multiplayer game of the holiday season!
OK, so I’ve tried to commit myself to blogging here weekly. I have an excuse last week though, or at least I believe I do. Here in Nashville last week was the annual Hypericon Sci-fi Convention. It’s a small but fun con. Over the last couple of years the convention has been moving from a heavy literary convention into trying to be more of a media show. I came in last year to run a track of programming for independent filmmakers, which is something fairly new on the convention circuit. So, I had to put together a good bit of programming and contact filmmakers to come in and participate on panels and in workshops. It was a great weekend of talking film, watching movies, and partying just a little too much. I love convention season! I’m going to a couple of conventions over the next couple of months and am already working to get some interviews with celebs for you guys. I’ll share more as things get confirmed. Do you guys do the convention thing?
The summer TV suck is upon us. There are a few series to keep an eye on but mostly it's just going to be long and hot and boring. I saw an add for a series on BBC America called HEX. I thought I might give the upcoming Saturday night episode a go. Anyone seen it? I set the DVR so if I get it watched I'll get a review up Monday....
OK, so I haven't been the best at posting here. Well, I'm vowing to get better. Many of you guys have asked questions that I should totally be answering here in this blog. The summer is here and the television season is slwoing jsut a bit so this seems like the perfect time to get in here at least once a week and post some updates. My two most anticipated season finales LOST and Heroes, have come and gone and both were excellent although in the aftermath the LOST finale was far more satisfying and better written than Heroes but LOST had two hours to spread out in and it's been on for a few seasons.
If you ahve questions or comments feel free to submit them here, adn I will log in at least once a week, maybe more, and answer them!
I know I need to get in here and post more often but I find so often that I say everything I'm thinking, at least in regards to media, somewhere in the articles I write so not much is left to put here.
I'm looking now at the hi def video formats. I have an XBOX 360 which I love and over the holiday I scored a 42 inch plasma HD TV. So, contemplation time is over, its' time to early adopt. I was planning months ago to get a PS3 and thus get a Blu-Ray player. But when the prices were announced I decided to skip it. I know in the long run the price of the PS3 isn't bad when comparing to stand alone Blu-Ray players but even still that dollar amount is just too high, especially for a system that only launched with one good game (Resistance). So, I guess by default I'm going to pick up the HD-DVD add-on for the 360. It's a cheap upgrade to get into hi-def. I don't however get the HDMI which I have for my cable box, and it rocks.
So, anybody else watching HD-DVD's? Waht do you think of them?
Thing are crzy in these parts even if the TV choices are pretty tepid. You may notice that I reviewed the first night of "The Lost Room". Due to circumstances beyond my control I was unable to see the other two nights. I have the whole thing on my DVR for viewing. The question is; does anyone still want to see a complete review? If so I'll be happy to do one.
Well I find myself getting excited for this new Star trek film that's in the works. I wish they'd do something radically different with the franchise but it looks like we are getting a young Kirk sort of prequel. While I think that's a mistake I have hope because the destructive team of Berman/Braga are nowhere to be found and JJ Abrahams and a mix of his pals that were behind Alias and LOST are writing and producing the new film. Abrahams hasn't said whether he's going to direct or not not. I loved Wrath of Khan and if he can help the franchise get back to that we could have something to get excited for.
I review TV series here at Mania so it's cool to have this place to talk about other things. Most of you know I'm a huge horror freak, but as much as I love horror I love documentary. So, from time to time I'd like to talk docs with you guys. I saw that G$ had a special broadcast of "Night of the Living Dead" with Mark and Mike from "American Movie" hosting. They got me thinking about that film, one of my all time favorite docs.
Mark is an out of it movie geek. While he doesn't seem like the brightest bulb his movie knowledge is quite surprising. He has a plan to make a film and get it in distribution and he even has the budget and the number of copies he needs to sell to make a profit all worked out. Now he just needs to get his Uncle to not only star in the film but prodcue, or, well pay for it. "American Movie" documents Mark's process of making his film. The feature falls through, so he turns to making a horror short called "Coven" pronounced like "woven" because saying it the real way just soudns to much like "oven" and that's no good.
It takes Mark years to get this film made, so many that you can see his uncle age in the film and the documentary filmmakers stay with Mark and his bizarre group of friends as they struggle to get the film made. As much as the movie is about making a film it's also about dedication and friendship. The best parts of the film happen when Mark interacts with his best friend a drug burnout named Mike.
When I'm making a film myself and I get frustrated with how it's going (and I usually do) I throw this film in and watch it and quit complaining. These guys took years to get their little short done adn stuck with it so what am I complaining about? If you ahven't seen it "American Movie" is one of the funniest docs you'll see. As I said it docuemnts these oddballs and their freindships as well as the trials of making a no budget horror short.
I've been meaning to start a public blog and thanks to the new Mania website I have a reason. Since I write for the TV section I'll try to comment here on some series that I don't have time to write full reviews for. I may also comment on some films others reviewed here too. Stay tuned!
