It didn't take long for the David Slade rumors to be confirmed. A day after Nikki Finke reported the director was circling The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Summit Entertainment has confirmed that the director has signed on the dotted line to helm the third production in their franchise. Filmmaker Slade came to prominence as a director for his work on 2006’s engrossing film Hard Candy starring Academy Award® Nominated actress Ellen Page as well as directing 2007’s genre hit 30 Days of Night which opened to number one at the box office its first weekend of release.

He will be tasked with adapting the story from a screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg, the same writer who penned the scripts for the first two films. The announcement was made by Erik Feig, Summit's President of Production.

"Stephenie Meyer's Eclipse is a muscular, rich, vivid book and we at Summit looked long and hard for a director who could do it justice." says Summit president Feig. "We believe we have found that talent in David Slade, a director who has been able to create complex, visually arresting worlds. We cannot wait to see the Eclipse he brings to life and brings to the fans eagerly awaiting its arrival in summer of 2010."

Author Stephenie Meyer, who likewise met with Slade before the decision was made, also voiced her pleasure with the latest director in charge of bringing her characters to the big screen.

"I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing Eclipse." says Meyer. "He's a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise. From the beginning, we've been blessed with wonderful directorial talent for the Twilight Saga, and I'm so happy that Eclipse will be carrying on with that tradition."

Plot Concept: In Eclipse, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will hit theaters in North America on Wednesday, June 30, 2010.

at least the same writer is involved....it's kinda like Steve Kloves constantly delivering the goods on Potter....well, except on the 5'th movie, which was a hash job by some other writer

Eclipse is a muscular, rich, vivid book....sounds to me someone's still thinking about that wolf pack from yesterday.

I like Slade. He is definitly the right choice for this, as Im hearing that eclipse is very dark and violent.

Well, I admit I liked both Hard Candy and 30 Days. So maybe there's hope here. Though I don't think many would call 30 Days a hit, sure it opened #1 but it crashed really quick, unfortunately.

This doesn't bode well for the 2nd movie. They must not have much confidence in Weitz, if they're already looking to replace him for the 3rd movie. Then again, it didn't take long for them to replace Hardwick from the 1st movie, so maybe the producers just have a short attention span or something.

It's not that, fft. Summit Entertainment want these sequels in theaters so near each other that different directors are requred. The post-production and shoot schedule run on top of each other. Weitz had to pass on the third production because of the overlapping production schedule.

Just like Hardwicke felt she couldn't do a 2nd movie on the schedule they wanted. Got it.  If I were Summit, though, I would be more concerned with putting out a good movie, not just a fast movie. But what the hell do I know?

JarrodSarafin 4/23/2009 2:35:25 PM

Totally agree with you there.

Not sure if Hardwicke had the same situation but I remember Weitz saying he couldn't do the third installment because it ran too close to the second film's schedule.

But the whole process is moving a bit too fast. Summit must feel they need to get these theaters in production before the stars age too fast ala the first few Harry Potter films.

okay Jarrod, fess up.....are you secretly a Twilight fan?

fft5305 4/24/2009 10:13:51 AM

That was exactly what Hardwicke said when asked about why she didn't do the 2nd movie. Not sure why she wouldn't come back for the 3rd, though, unless she's already working on something else. Ah. Just checked IMDb and she's in pre-production on Maximum Ride. Entertaining books, but I don't think they'll be good for live action. They should go high-end animation on that one. But that's just me...
