Screenwriter Carl Ellsworth hasd come aboard the gestating SLEEPLESS KNIGHTS project set up at DreamWorks. Variety reports that Ellsworth will write the script for the project, which itself is based on a comic book created by Grant Morrison (ANIMAL MAN, NEW X-MEN, THE INVISIBLES). Don Murphy (NATURAL BORN KILLERS, THE TRANSFORMERS) is producing the picture.
The Variety statement that SLEEPLESS KNIGHTS is based on a Morrison comic book is perplexing; the last we heard, Morrison had written it as an original screenplay himself. Perhaps since that time he's decided to turn it into a comic and leave the screenplay to someone else.
SLEEPLESS KNIGHTS is a fantasy that features a group of kids being the only hope to save the world when Halloween night -- complete with real ghosts, goblins and other things that go bump in the night -- arrives and never ends. Variety says that the tone of the film is lighthearted adventure in a manner similar to the 1984 film THE GOONIES.
Scribe Ellsworth is listed on The Internet Movie Database as having written an episode of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (the second season episode "Halloween" which may be what got him the gig to work on SLEEPLESS KNIGHTS), an episode of XENA: PRINCESS WARRIOR ("Looking Death in the Eye"), and the feature RED EYE that's now in active development.
