What They Say
Eight years after his mother's death, Distol learns that his sister, Princess Ooona, has been chosen as the holy maiden. The holy maiden sacrifices her own life to give power to the seal that binds the demon king. As Distol curses himself for not being able to protect the people he loves, a witch appears and makes him an offer that he can't refuse. She'll give him the power he's always wanted but only if he invades Bastarauge, kidnaps the princess Elena, and corrupts her from within. A new dark age is about to begin...The Review!
Seeking revenge for his mother and to free his sister, Prince Distol accepts the powers of darkness to corrupt another princess.Audio:
For our primary viewing session, we listened to this show in its original language of Japanese. It's the only language track included here as once again there's no dub for a new adult release. The track is a fairly standard stereo mix with a bit of directionality across the two channels that sounds decent if not terribly immersive. Dialogue is mostly center channel based but it comes across clean and clear and we had no problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.Video:
Originally released in 2004, the transfer for this OVA series is presented in its original full frame aspect ratio. While not as high quality as some of the other recent shows we've seen, the animation here is good and the transfer captures its qualities well. The source material has lots of bright vivid colors and some decent animation that doesn't show too many shortcuts. The colors generally look good and solid though there are some areas where you can see some interlacing going on but it is a fairly small issue all told and most likely not noticeable on most setups. This is essentially a problem free transfer for the most part with very good looking animation.Packaging:
The front cover is done up in an interesting manner with about a third of it given over to black space where the series logo and episode title is while the remainder of the top portion has gold borders while inside is the illustration of a close-up of Elena and Distol kissing, a forced kiss that has her in tears. It's a rather dramatic piece and it's framed really well. The back cover has a has a set of six pictures from the show that lets you see exactly what the animation style is like, nudity and all, and goes on to a very lengthy series summary over two detailed paragraphs. The production and technical information round out the bottom of the cover and is pretty straightforward other than not listing any of the languages here beyond the subtitles.Menu:
The main menu is a decent simple piece that has a slightly zoomed in version of the front cover as its static background. The bottom corner puts the series name while the basic navigation is down along the left, the whole thing set to a brief loop of instrumental music from the show. They do combine the extras and setup menu though which I don't care for at all. Access times are nice and fast and with no English language dub on here the player presets are somewhat moot.Extras:
The only included extra here is an image gallery done in slideshow format.Content:

Holy plot and a half! With a title like Slutty Princess Diaries, you certainly really don't expect a books worth of intrigue, plot and setup for the show, especially in a fantasy setting like this. There's so much explanation and exposition going on throughout this first episode that if it wasn't for about five minutes worth of sex scenes you'd have a fairly standard fantasy knock-off series.
We're quickly introduced to a young dark prince named Distol who has just finished kidnapping the Princess Elena from the kingdom of Bastarauge. Squirreling her away where he can have his way with her, he storms into her room and simply starts ravishing her against her protests. His internal monologue kicks in at this point and he starts to recount the tale that's led him to this point. This covers the next twenty-five minutes or so of the show before we get through all of the setup and he finishes off his sex scene with her. Longest flashback ever in an adult series.
During the course of the flashback, we learn that Distol is the adopted son of the royal family of Astaria, a kingdom neighboring Bastarauge. He'd grown up very well taken care of and close to his mother the Queen and his younger sister Qoona. All of this went well up until recently when Bastarauge framed the nation and surrounded it with its military might. The demands from the king brought the Queen and Distol to Bastarauge where they were to stay for some time to settle things out but after a few days the Queen died. Distol was cooled down in prison for about a month before he was let out. From there, he spent his time in training with the sword in order to be able to avenge his mother and protect Qoona should the need arise.
He'd spent some time talking with the Bastarauge princess, Elena, who had taken something of a liking to him but he didn't care much. Elena's guardians had little love for Distol, such as the general, a cold woman named Cecil, and the foreign elfen warrior Yuna. They occasionally came into contact with each other but nobody really was all that open with each other about things. Everything changed though when a witch showed up before Distol and showed him images of the Bastarauge king raping his mother until she died. This comes at the same time that he learns that Qoona has been chosen as the maiden that will be sacrificed in order to keep a powerful demon king sealed.
The witch, a purple haired vixen named Eleanor, offers Distol a way to save Qoona by giving him the power he needs but telling him there are conditions to be met. Having already sworn to give his soul up to save Qoona, he accepts the power easily. To bind the deal, the two engage in some against the tree fast action sex which culminates in a climax of power flowing into Distol's body. The conditions aren't pretty for him though as he must take the princess Elena from Bastarauge and corrupt her in order to break the seal of purity within her. This ends up bringing us back to the present where the flashback ends after he bursts into her room and kidnaps her.
Unlike a lot of other series we've been watching lately, the animation and design style of this feels much more traditional in its look but with the clean digital feel to it. It has a slightly more cartoonish feel to it and lacks some of that realism that comes from a lot of other shows. It's certainly not bad but it definitely is a particular kind of animation that some favor and some don't. The artwork itself is very crisp and clean however with lots of bright colors in places, such as Elena's outfits or the hair color of the Queen and her daughter but it works well in the dark colors also.In Summary:
While I certainly like plot and story in these shows, this one is just so over the top in getting so much squeezed into the first episode that it really feels like the sex is an afterthought for it. The two scenes that are here are decent though with one of them split across a flashback it's not exactly the best one to watch. I'm curious to see how it will go from here since there is so much going on and at stake but if they keep it as plot heavy as it is, as simple of a plot as it is, this won't be a series that will light too many fires.
