TV Wasteland

Small Screen Big Screen

I haven’t talked about this in a while and it seems like there’s been a lot of news this week relating to television series being moved to the big screen. More often than not, the movies that come from old television series are a mess, but unfortunately, they usually make money and as we are so often reminded Hollywood is a business. This week alone we saw word trickle out that Eddie Murphy will be playing multiple roles in the big screen adaptation of Fantasy Island (as reported here) and now word that Brad Pitt might play He-Man and Robert Rodriguez is in talks with Warner Brothers to update two classic series The Jetsons, an animated series from the 60’s and Lord of the Last, a Sid and Marty Kroft series from the 70’s.

OK, He-Man has already been brought to the big screen once in a disaster called Masters of the Universe and that’s a place I really don’t want to revisit, even with Brad Pitt involved. The Jetsons might actually be a fun kid’s movie, but nothing I’d wait in line for. Don’t even get me started on how bad an idea Fantasy Island starring Eddie Murphy in multiple parts brought to us from the creators of Norbit is. It’s time we make a stand and stop letting the crack called nostalgia drag us to the movies and throwing our money away or it’s just going to get worse. Nuff said…

Lots of season finales this week! Big shows I won’t miss include Heroes, which isn’t a finale but it’s one of the last few episodes and the story is really heating up. LOST has been fantastic and again, it isn’t the season finale but this week we finally learn why Jack has been acting so damn strange, oh and Charlie might kick the bucket. I’m also actually planning to check out The Simpsons season finale to see if that series has been able to reclaim some of its former glory.
Monday
HEROES (NBC, 8:00pm PST) “Landslide”
Peter and Ted try to leave New York to avoid the explosion while Nathan weighs advice from his mother against plans with Linderman, Hiro gets some information from his father before facing Sylar. It’s gonna be good!
24 (FOX, 9:00pm PST) “Day 6 3:00AM to 4:00 AM”
Things get personal for Jack because Daddy’s back and he wants to take Jack’s nephew to China. Things start to further heat up between the U.S., Russia, and China.
Tuesday
HOUSE (FOX, 9:00pm PST) “The Jerk”
A rude 16 year old collapses after picking a fistfight with another kid. First he has a headache then his organs begin to fail.
VERONICA MARS (CW, 9:00pm PST) “I Know What You’ll Do Next Summer”
Veronica is hired by a Ugandan to investigate whether a Hearst student that was forced to be a child soldier is his son. Keith investigates a series of home burglaries that threaten his chances in the upcoming election.
Wednesday
LOST (ABC, 10:00pm PST) “Greatest Hits”
While Jack devises a plan to do away with the others for good Sayid discovers a flaw in the others methods they may lead to rescue (don’t hold your breath). This week is another Charlie flashback.
MEDIUM (NBC, 10:00pm PST) “Everything Comes to a Head”
Allison’s psychic abilities are revealed to the public while she works to nab a serial killer. The season finale stars special guests Jason Priestley and Nev Campbell.
Thursday
LOST (ABC, 10:00pm PST) “The Answers”
A special hosted by the producers where every answered question is recapped for the season and every unanswered question is examined. If you stopped watching the series this is a good refresher to get caught up.
SMALLVILLE (NBC, 8:00pm PST) “Phantom”
Based on the previews this season finale looks like it’s going to be good. Clark finds out what Lex did to convince Lana to marry him while Lana is telling Lex it’s over. Looks like Lana gets a bitch slap! The Martian Manhunter shows up to help Clark stop Lex from capturing the last Phantom Zone wraith.
SUPERNATURAL (CBS, 9:00pm PST) “What All Hell Breaks Loose”
In the season finale, the fight between Sam and Jake is over and Dean is left dealing with the fallout. The hunters are attacked by the demon until help arrives from an unexpected source.
Friday
STARGATE SG-1 (SCIFI, 8:00pm PST) “Bad Guys”
The team become trapped in a museum on another planet and must pose as a militant group and take hostages in order to buy time for an escape.
STARGATE ATLANTIS (SCIFI, 9:00pm PST) “The Ark”
Survivors are revived from suspended animation on a space station but problems from their past come back to haunt the team.
PAINKILLER JANE (SCIFI, 10:00pm PST) “Breakdown”
Patients in a mental facility all suffer from the same nightmare prompts Jane to investigate looking for a connection to a Neuro.
Saturday
HEROES MARATHON (ACIFI, 9:00am PST) Marathon
From 9am Saturday all the way to 6am Sunday, see the entire season so far of one of the best shows on TV.
THE SIXTH SENSE (ABCFAM, 7:30pm PST)
Yep, it’s on again and pickings are actually a little slim for this night, pun intended. If you haven’t seen M. Night’s film about a boy who can see dead people, then check it out. For my money, Unbreakable is better though.
Sunday
THE SIMPSONS (FOX, 8:00pm PST) “24 Minutes/You Kent Always Say What You Want”
The hour long season finale is a spoof of another FOX series 24. The episode even features guest appearances from Jack and Chloe! The school’s CTU tries to thwart terrorist interruption of a bake sale via a stink bomb. In the next story, local anchorman Kent Brockman is fired after cursing on the air when Homer spills coffee in his lap.
THE SOPRANOS (HBO, 9:00pm PST) “The Second Coming”
Tony’s offer to settle differences between New York and New Jersey is rejected by Phil: A.J. continues to battle depression and Tony comes to Meadow’s rescue.

"Lord of the Last"?

I think you mean "Land of the Lost"

Seems like this has been a pretty decent season for tv programs, I'm actually going to miss a few of them.
Can't help but think that as Sopranos winds down, there are going to be some explosive endings.

I actually liked that Masters of the Universe movie. It certainly beats Superman IV, which was released the same year. I have it on DVD and it's still entertaining.

Another Smallville finale where everything goes to hell. I'm there. I hope the season finale of Supernatural isn't the series finale. CW is looking to get rid of dead wood. Already gone is 7th Heaven and Gilmore Girls. Veronica Mars and Supernatural are definitely on the endangered list. Smallville probably has one more year in it.

CW cancelling 7th Heaven wasn't a huge surprise, given that it was briefly canceled after the re-organization, then they decided to give it one more season. Gilmore Girls also not too surprising - it looks like if it had been renewed, it probably would have been an abbreviated season. Out of Veronica Mars and Supernatural, I think Supernatural has the better chance of survival. The problem with CW is if they are looking to clean out the dead wood, they could easily lose all but a few of their series. The only series that are doing remotely well for them are Smallville, Smackdown, Top Model, and Beauty and the Geek. I hope they don't take that as a sign to ramp up orders for non-scripted programming...

I love Supernatural, it is alot of fun, i really hope it makes it. The production costs can't be very high, so hopefully it will be OK.

I must be in a major minority, but I gave up on Lost a long time ago. I also abandoned Heroes after half a season. It moved way too slow for me and I really didn't care for most of the characters. I guess I'm just not in the mood at this point for sci fi/super hero tv shows. I wouldn't mind a truly creepy supernatural show like the XFiles again. Or, maybe a 24 like series centering around a group who hunts seriel killers. I think that could be an interesting concept.

Is it just me or does Elizabeth Mitchell (in the article pic) look strikingly like a blond Carrie-Anne Moss?

I think one of the biggest problems for serial shows is that if you miss a few shows, you feel like you've missed out on so much that it's not worth sticking with. Despite the increasing existance of recorders, I think they should make more of a point to replay blocks of the show (say, 3-4 episodes) on the weekend, when they're not really wasting airtime. Having a marathon (Heroes, Saturday, see above) is a great idea, but I think the entire season just before the very end of the season is a little much, too late.

But yeah, Cappy, I fell off the Lost wagon long ago, too, but I'm happily riding with Heroes - good pace imo.

Thank you! Everytime that picture popped up on my screen, I though there was something strangely familiar about it, but I just couldn't put my finger on it. "Dodge this!"
