OK, I'm not a heavy drinker so I don't know, but doesn't alcohol tolerance come from the physical habituation of the body, not knowledge?  Sure, Carter Hall is in his 50s and has been drinking for decades, but that is just this lifetime.  I wouldn't think that alcohol consumed 3000 years ago would affect his present body.

This is a show about Superman, not Hawkman, but wouldn't a few flashbacks from his past lives, Highlander style, be sweet?

@Joe, bottom line is the bullet thing didn't bother me, and if you have such a quibble with it then by all means talk about it. Same with Lois' drinking. My larger point is that I think you take your disappointment with the "sloppiness" of the writers as you put it to such an extreme that you look for them and relish bashing on it. I've written several entertainment reviews myself and my whole point was that if you actually liked this episode as you claimed you did, gave it a B , then your review should focus on more of the good than the nitpicky bad. Without seeing the grade, just based on your comments I'd have thought you gave the episode a C- or a D. At this point in Smallville's run, we all know about its flaws and to focus so much of your space on that seems like you do indeed just relish trashing on the show each week, regardeless of what happens.

Smallville to me has been one of those rare shows that has gotten so much better deeper into its run. When they finally abandoned the Clark's Creek formula and moved the show to Metropolis, got rid of Lana in favor of Lois, and started deeply incorporating the DC mythos, it has become a much darker and more compelling show. So far this final season is shaping up to be a great one in finally turning him into Superman.

As for Durance, I don't think my saying she is "great" in her role can remotely be compared with film actresses like Meryl Streep. This is a sci-fi show on the teen network after all. It's all relative. My point is that of all the Lois Lanes I've seen over the years, she has done the best job of capturing that hard-headed, funny, and spunky reporter that we all know and love from the comics. (And, yes, her tremendous hotness doesn't hurt.) Is she a stellar actress that'll win Oscars or Emmys? No. But does she play a great Lois Lane? Yes.

@JDK008, I am not trolling. I visit Mania everyday and appreciate that it's one of the few sites that gives in-depth reviews about shows I like such as Smallville, I simply wish there was a better balance in Joe's reviews and that they didn't come off as the weekly Crap On This Terrible Show column.

"By the way, it was nice to see where all of Metropolis goes during the day since they are clearly never on the streets. They all hang out at the bus station." - lol priceless.

Anyway.  Love me some Michael Shanks.  Really miss the old Jackson/O'neil witty banter back on SG-1.

Loved the scenes between Lois and Carter.  And am unbelievably pleased that instead of playing games and denying it, Carter just comes right out and says "You should discuss this with Clark."  For ONCE no games with people pretending they dont' know.

Liked the Deadshot character.  Sort of hated the Cat Grant crap, but will admit I did find amusement in some of the scenes.  That said, I don't really understand why they HAD to use the name Cat Grant, flat out saying it's not THE Cat Grant, and her REAL name isn't even Cat Grant.  Why not Elizabeth Smith?  or somebody else we've never heard of?

As for that final scene, I was both excited, and scared, by what might be his new look.  Glad to see the colors, a little disturbed that he seemed like he'd stopped at a salon, had his hair and makeup done before running up the stairs to stand on the roof and litter.  Personally, I say we don't need a transition costume, but him in THE costume, or none at all.  THe part that really pisses me off, I fully expect that come the beginning of the next episode, he won't be on the building anymore at all and they'll pretend that scene that tried to make us think he was going to fly didn't happen.  Call it a morbid hunch.

Speaking of teases...seriously, WTF happened to the glasses he started to wear last year?

xpaladinx45 10/5/2010 10:36:26 AM

I should point out, I don't mind them changing stuff for this show (i.e., Clark not wearing glasses) but I DO hate when they throw in names we all know, or little tidbits like glasses, capes, flying, costumes, etc. with typically no intentions of it meaning anything, other than to stir up excitement.

I was just wondering what cell phone carrier Lois and Carter have.  That cell service is AMAZING!! And no, they weren't Satellite phones.  They didn't look anything like sat phones.

@Joe, after reading my previous comments again (1st page), I think I came off a little harsher  than intended. Overall you do a good job.

Over the past 9 seasons, I've come to accept the fact that Smallville will never be what a true Superman fan wants it to be. So I just sit back and enjoy watching a halfway decent show about Clark Kent's ridiculously long journey to becoming The Man of Steel. Hopefully this season will give us some pretty good episodes (I've enjoyed the 2 so far) and end with Clark finally flying and donning the tights. It would be nice if it happened mid-season so we could see more than a few minutes or one episode of full-on Superman. Probably just wishful thinking though.

@JDK, you the man, man.   ;)

@karas, we will have to agree to disagree on the whether or not a tolerance for drinking can be developed over centuries of reincarnation. I do assume I've been a drunkard in previous lives, which would explain my impressive ability to suck em back.

@steakguy, here's how I feel about the show, and it's the best explanation I can give; I love the characters, I want the show to do better, and I am furious and frustrated when I see simple gaps in logic go unchecked show after show. I don't feel I'm nitpicking. I truly believe Clark would and should have smoothed out that bullet just as any cop would not assume he/she could properly read a letter from a trash can if it were crumpled up. It's simple common sense. When a show misses stuff like that, I call em on it. Smallville misses that stuff all the time and I always call them. I'm not waiting for them to made a tiny mistake, I'd be happy with a tiny mistake. There is NO logic in assuming that bullet was only meant for Cat, especailly when his own name contains the same letters. If I saw a crumpled paper that read JOTLE, I would assume it could be me, and not some guy named John Tuttle I just met yesterday.

I have no problem with you though, at least you make your arguement in an intelligent manner... not like that dooooosh below you in the comment box.

@xpal, sadly I share your morbid hunch. I've only had two seasons of disappointment. I feel for you stalwarts.

@redhairs, seriously if that were the extent of the logic issues you'd never hear a peep out of me, but yeah, heap that on to an already healthy pile, and it's worth bitching about.

@wesleywells, I hear you. it's only my second season on the show, so I haven't accepted what they do, and let it roll off me without complaining. I will say I have enjoyed some episodes, but I don't think they've made too many that I loved. Best I hope for is more good than bad.

Honestly, Joe, I rewatched the episode last night and neither Carter Hall nor Lois Lane appeared to be drunk in that scene.

And I think I gotta side with Kara about the tolerance issue.  I think it much more physiological than mental tolerance.  I know, in particular from my college days, that if I got drunk everyday for one week (just and example) that by the end of the week my tolerance would be pretty high.  However, if I went a week or two without drinking, then I the next time I tossed a couple back, my tolerance would have dropped significantly.

I think the cell phone thing, Clark buying a plane ticket (WTH? Why couldn't he just run there since he still can't fly for whatever reason?) and Chloe's love note were the biggest problems I had with the episode.  The Cat Grant thing didn't bug me too much.  The mentioned in passing several times that she was the "real" Cat Grant.  And the bullet thing, while irritating, wasn't that big of a deal for me.  I mean, Clark's shown a lot worse when it comes to leaps in logic than that.  He isn't exactly Superman, yet! Also, if Chloe removed all "digital" record of Chloe Sullivan why would she leave a sexy photo of herself in her bedroom drawer?  Seems sloppy if you're trying to wipe all record of yourself.

I did like that Michael Shanks kind of used his experience as Dr. Daniel Jackson and threw in a little Indiana Jones for Carter Hall this week.  Hell, they even talked about the anicent god Ra.  Hopefully, Carter doesn't have to leave this life before the end of the season.
