SMALLVILLE: Kara

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Saturday, October 06, 2007

If what we’re seeing in this episode is in any way an example of the quality of the shows we are going to be treated to this season, it’s a good thing this is the last one. We get real introductions to two new characters in this episode and both actors are terrible. This week, Clark is dealing with the loss or Lois and has decided to leave Smallville, after he helps Lois investigate the dam. Lois finds a ship similar to Clark’s and of course right away, she’s unconscious. Clark and Kara finally meet and it seems she was sent to Earth to find Clark but when her ship crashed underwater, she was kept in suspended animation for 18 years, giving Clark time to grow up and catch up with Kara in age. Apparently, she used to play with Clark when he was a baby back on Krypton. This girl is a horrid actress who walks around with her mouth hanging open so much a group of birds could set up housekeeping in there.

So, Clark and Kara learn who each other are, that’s really about all that happens that’s important. Apparently a dark government agency retrieves Kara’s ship and sets off an alarm that’s equivalent to a nuclear bomb. Lois again finds the ship and after touching it she’s again knocked out. Sometimes, I feel like I’m yelling in a vacuum here because I feel like I’m the only one who’s so sick of seeing characters knocked out on this show so the super heroes can do their thing. Lana and Lois have been knocked out so many times you’d think they’d just start walking around wearing football helmets all the time. After Kara’s ship is destroyed, Clark tells her she can stay on the farm as long as she wants. The only interesting thing about the interaction between Clark and Kara is that she explains that she was sent by her father, Clark’s uncle, to Earth because earth was believed to be the future of the Kryptonian race and to find Clark. This uncle seems nefarious in his actions and maybe Kara is too.

The side stories are even less interesting that the Clark/Kara story. Lois is determined to get a story about the alien ship and the new editor of the Daily Planet wants that article too. He offers her a job at the Planet if she can get the article. This guy, named Grant, is a terrible actor. In the end, Lois spends too much time knocked out to get the article but she gets the job anyway. Now I see that this is a setup for Lois to take her place in the mythology, but I’m disappointed the show is going this route because Chloe is so much more likable than Lois. I think they could have handled Lois being the star reporter of The Daily Planet in a ton of better and more interesting ways. I’d still like to see Lois dead and Chloe writing for the Planet using the name Lois as her pen name. Speaking of dead, it wasn’t a surprise to anyone to see Lana in the season premiere hiding out. I wanted her to be dead to badly for it to actually be true. Her character ran its course two seasons ago and it’s time for her to go, one way or another. Now with a visit from Lex, she knows she can safely return to Smallville, and she will next week.

So, to repeat and synopsize, nothing really happened in this episode, well other than the introductions of two new cast members that neither of which can act. My requirements for this show aren’t really that high, stuff just needs to happen and this week hardly anything does. Yeah, some of you will say but Kara did this and Clark did that and Lois did this. All of that could have happened in about ten minutes of any other more well written show. I’m giving it a C- only because this is the last season and I feel like there might be potential for something to happen with the Kara character. If it weren’t for that, the score would be much lower.

Smallville is going to limp across the finish line. It has become a convoluted mess. The show has relied on countless introductions of characters. A 7-year origin story packed with filler.
We'll see Clark fly and wear the tights in the series finale. Sorry if I spoiled it.

After season 4 nearly killed the show, I myself "limped" through season 5 but 6 was enjoyable for the most part and I felt maybe they were on an upswing heading to the end. If this is any indication...maybe not.

The show's link to the mythos has always been tenuous at best but season 6 gave the feeling they had made a statement...stop looking at your old comic books! This is all free form now! At least that's how it felt to me and I was glad for it.

Anyway, just one episode, maybe just given some time.....maybe.

I don't think it's a huge spoiler, originaldave77, to say in the end we'll see Clark assume his role as Superman. Personally, I'd feel hugely let down after all this to NOT see him standing atop the Daily Planet, cape flowing, as the final shot of the series.

YEah i liked this episode. But i do think this needs to be the last season with as little Lana as possible. Her being alive was no surprise. The Clone thing was stupid. Her character needs to move away to wherever Pete is living.

This is not the last season of Smallville. Tom Welling is contracted with Warner Brothers, and CW Network for 8 seasons. This has been confirmed on more than one occasion from different Reps. The fact that he was not able to play Superman in the Justice League Movie was due to this. To the person who writes this. please get your information right.

Hmm, I love the fact that at the first clash she totally knocks the hell out of Clark and instantly is hovering over him. Oh yes, and the fact that later on she just realises "No one on Earth can move that fast" - to Clark as if it wasn't apparent when they first clashed. I was suprised Clark didnt get his but kicked the second time around. This is ridiculous, the first fight she has with a super powered person (Clark) and he's the one who gets his butt kicked. Atleast mid episode he got her back but it was poorly done. After knocking him down in the beginning she should know not to turn her back against him. Tssk Tssk their story and writing skills need a little polishing. This was a piss poor episode in my book.

Well, I thought I was the only one who thought this episode sucked. I'll admit, I'm a bit of a feminist, but when I heard they were adding Super Girl to the cast I groaned. Why? Why, when WB had such success with Green Arrow and the formation of The Justice League would they back off of such an awesome opportunity for a spin off? And, yes, Lana needs to go as well. She's not the small town girl that Clark fell in love with, she's now a coniving *itch who deserves Lex and all of his underhandedness. I like Chloe, I like Lionel, I like Clark (even when he proves not to be the brightest bulb), heck, I even liked Lois at one time, but they all seem bored with the series. Put it to bed, call it a night, put it out of its misery.

archrayne666...Just because Tom Welling is contracted for 8 seasons does not mean there will be an 8th season...If you know anything at all about T.V ratings, if they are small and have dropped off then advertisers will start pulling spots and Smallville has dropped in ratings, the show has lost money so far this season...I don't think it comes back next season no matter how many actors are contracted for 8 years...

And how come he can't fly? That's getting old too. I'm guessing he will fly halfway through the season as a ratings stunt, (if this is the last season, which I hope it is) but he will never wear the tights, even in the finale. They already said because of the Superman Returns movie, and probably now the JLA movie, that Welling would never wear them, which I think is stupid.

And another thing, when is he going to have time to go to college and get his degree for journalism? Is he taking classes online??

I have to agree with you guys. Frankly I am getting real tired of the no flying business. Its starting to piss me off. Yeah, yeah Clark might have a Phobia about it or maybe he feels this will be the one last thing that seperates him from feeling human. Get over it!!!! he's Kryptonian and seem to be excepting it, but Frack at what price? You would think that with all hes faced he would want learn to use the one power among his many others, that could give him an edge against his enemies. You know what else pisses me off. Finally when he seems ready F@#ckin finish his training, Jor-El flips him the bird and tells him his training is to watch his F@#ckin Cousin. WTF is going on here? Won't his training possibly fix this flying issue problem, among other things? I'm starting to think as smart as these Kryptonians think they are, they seem to have their heads up their asses which is why they freaken died. In my book it might have been better that they did.
