HITCHHIKERS GUIDE Continues Without Douglas Adams - Sep 20, 2008 - 04:01pm
"i for one am very interested in reading his continuations." I'm not because it just won't be the same, no matter who's writing it.

No Commentary on IRON MAN DVD - Sep 08, 2008 - 02:46pm
It is getting to the point where I wonder why I buy DVD's when the companies keep pulling shit like this. I could toss out 75% of my DVD's right now and not miss any of them.

Vin Diesel: RIDDICK Sequels Still Possible - Aug 25, 2008 - 05:25pm
The whole Riddick things seems like a lot of potential that nobody has yet to figure out how to capitalize on. Have only seen a bit of Pitch Black, but always heard great things about it. Went to see Chronicles of Riddick and was left wondering what all the buzz was about.

Comicscape: Robert Kirkman Calls You Out - Aug 21, 2008 - 07:38pm
Apparently Kirkman believes it's easy for everybody to break into the industry if he thinks everybody must work on their own projects before going off to work for Marvel or DC? Maybe that isn't the case, but it's the impression he leaves. Maybe in his vision for a grand utopia of comics he failed to notice that something like 75% of all comics sold come from Marvel and DC. And there is no guarantee that you'll ever be able to get your own stuff published, whether pre-Marvel/DC or post. The market is just that jam packed with stuff right now that it's hard to get noticed.

Iron Man Disses The DARK KNIGHT - Aug 17, 2008 - 12:16pm
"The better film won; Marvel has had its day in the sun for far too long now. It's time for DC to reclaim the throne that is most rightfully theirs now." I can only laugh at how so many are passing such judgments. Better film = nothing more than opinion; plenty of great films have had crap box office, and plenty of crap films have earned far more than they deserved. Box office does not determine quality at all. Marvel has been top for so long = yep, Marvel should just start putting out crap so DC can finally put out better films. How about putting the onus on WB/DC to improve their quality instead of giving us films like Superman Returns? A throne that is rightfully DC's? Uhuh. See again: Superman Returns. Catwoman. Of their own characters, from their main universe - you know, the equivalent of the Iron Mans and Spider-Mans, not the side-stuff like Watchmen and V For Vendetta - DC has had one home run and several strikeouts. What's really sad is that it's taken WB this long to notice that people want QUALITY adaptations. The Dark Knight is not enough to show that they've learned their lesson.

Iron Man Disses The DARK KNIGHT - Aug 16, 2008 - 08:14am
"What else is there to do after his film got raped by TDK though?" What the hell are you talking about? Is +$300 million suddenly a drop in the bucket? Iron Man didn't get raped by anything. I've read a lot of stupid crap on this site, but this one just might take 1st prize.

The 5 Best and 5 Worst Movie Breaches of Comic Book Canon - Aug 13, 2008 - 03:02pm
"Famke Janssen's throwaway dispatch of James Marsden's Cyclops...threw a monkey-wrench into the entire proceedings, and saddled X-3 with a burden from which some felt it never recovered." And that was just the beginning for X3. From Juggernaut being a mutant, to Beast's blue fur also apparently due to his being a mutant, to Callisto not being, well, Callisto. Toss in a complete lack of accents for Storm, Pyro, and Colossus, and you have a clusterf*ck against comic book canon. I expect this mess to continue, to some degree, based on what I've read for Wolverine.

Book Buzz: Hugo Winners Announced - Aug 11, 2008 - 08:43pm
It kind of tells you something about the World Science Fiction Convention when it takes place in Denver, where I live, and it's about sci-fi, which I utterly love, and I have no smegging clue that it was even happening. But three Hugo's in a row for Steven Moffat. Nice!

Details for IRON MAN DVD Release - Aug 08, 2008 - 02:18pm
I've been looking forward to getting Iron Man on DVD since I saw the film. But, I'm still disappointed that with each new release, the extras on DVD's are getting thinner and thinner. I also wonder how long it will be before all extras are only available on a Blu Ray release, rather than DVD, as a means of pushing the format.

Comicscape: The Ever-Expanding Comic-Con - Aug 06, 2008 - 07:05pm
Attending a SDCC is, imo, as stressful as it is enjoyable. I've gone a couple of times and will probably be going again next year, and I pretty much like things the way they are. Yeah, it sucks that I'll never get into Hall H, but with more and more footage hitting the web every year, you don't need to be to the biggest panels unless you desperately need to see that brand spankin' new teaser trailer. Last year, I wanted to get into the Futurama panel, but the line was Hall H-esque. When I got home, the whole damn thing was up for watching on Sci-Fi.com. So, I didn't miss anything anyways. So, I tend to pick out the stuff involving writers/creators I enjoy, such as the Marvel panels, or last year the Star Trek panel (which included IDW, Tokyopop, and Pocket Books). It was at SDCC last year that news first broke that IDW would be doing Doctor Who comics, so why would you pass on that attention? If you're not at SDCC, nobody is looking your way. I try and get to all the booths, not for freebies, but to see if there's anything out there that might catch my eye. Also, you'll never know who you get to meet on the floor, as there are often as many autograph and photo sessions there as there is upstairs in the main signing area. What I do wonder though is how so many of these small, independent publishers can afford a booth. Because there are tons of 'em, which is a good thing. But it just makes me wonder. :)

FF VII Advent Children Blu-ray Due - Aug 04, 2008 - 02:22pm
If I had a PS3 or Blu Ray player, this would definitely be on my Must Have list. And rulo, they are making more FF7-based video games. Dirge of Cerebus, already out on PS2 for a year now, was among them.

Columbia Plans Greek Epic ANABASIS - Aug 03, 2008 - 03:07pm
Test.

Columbia Plans Greek Epic ANABASIS - Aug 02, 2008 - 10:44pm
I haven't heard of this book, but let's face it, it will be compared to 300 from now until long after this movie is released, should it actually get made.

Top Maniacal Rumors: More Hulk, Raimi Flashbacks and Craven Screams - Aug 02, 2008 - 10:44pm
"Good day to you sir/asshole..." Ahh, yet another reason this site just isn't what it used to be. That it attracts the folks who's lives revolve around "I admit I'm childish so that makes it ok", and the fact that the admins of this site let it go.

Top Maniacal Rumors: More Hulk, Raimi Flashbacks and Craven Screams - Aug 01, 2008 - 07:51pm
"it just makes you look like a childish asshole" I suggest finding a mirror. You might be shocked at what you see.

Top Maniacal Rumors: More Hulk, Raimi Flashbacks and Craven Screams - Aug 01, 2008 - 02:34pm
"Smeg, you must be new to this column.." No, I'm not. But next time this site does something pointless, I'll be sure to point it out sooner. Or every time you post one; I'll start with those stupid anime articles. "This is supposed to be a rehash of the top news and rumors." That is titled "Top Manical Rumors". As I said, there's little in the way of rumors. This is nothing but stuff rehashed everywhere else. So, I ask again: what happened to this site reporting real news? "This is just a weekly wrap-up column for users who may not have been around during the week." Maybe if the site wasn't designed in such a sh*tty manner, people could actually find said articles from during the week.

Top Maniacal Rumors: More Hulk, Raimi Flashbacks and Craven Screams - Aug 01, 2008 - 07:07am
Not much in the way of rumors, as most of this stuff has easily been confirmed. Rumors are, by definition, those things not easily confirmed. So, I have to ask: what the hell happened to this site that it's merely a rehash of what everybody else is reporting elsewhere? If Marvel hopes to make The Avengers in a budget that doesn't break the bank, Marvel is going to have to consider some unknowns for roles like Captain America and Thor. More so since Thor's budget is already reportedly well north of $100 mil.

THE DARK KNIGHT: The Joker's Wild! - Jul 18, 2008 - 09:57pm
"it may come across that way, but it's not my intent." Wow, you need to reread your earlier posts then, because not only did it seem like your intent, you were a total dick in saying it. Keep reading and rereading what joeybaloney said as well until it sinks in. "But then again, maybe that's why your with her." Yeah, there's that dick part I mentioned above. What a worthless sack of sh*t you've been in this thread.

THE DARK KNIGHT: The Joker's Wild! - Jul 18, 2008 - 09:47pm
"One reviewer said the film was too in love with itself and took itself too seriously." And taking it seriously is why this film is going to be loved, while the Schumacher films will continue be held up as an example of how you do NOT make a Batman film. The film was incredible. The actors, outside of Maggie Gyllenhaal who was actually worse than Katie Holmes, were all excellent. The story, from beginning to end, was wonderfully done and showed how you really write a film with multiple villians, unlike the mess that was Spidey 3. It definitely lived up to the hype.

And The New T-800 TERMINATOR Is...? - Jul 18, 2008 - 09:36pm
"In the highly anticipated new installment of "The Terminator" film franchise" Uhh, you guys can stop making crap up any time now. I don't see anybody screaming "OMFG I gotta see that!" for another Terminator film. They should've stopped after 2, but Hollywood never learns.

New Full Trailer for Frank Miller's SPIRIT - Jul 16, 2008 - 04:38pm
"I am not sure why everyone says it reminds them of Sin City" How about any time there is nothing but black & white with, say, a red necktie? That wasn't a dead giveaway?

DVD Shopping Bag: Marvel vs. DC - Jul 16, 2008 - 08:29am
"Marvel Studios is up and running now so perhaps, with all their characters back under their control and in this new Millennium, the tide will change." Only, all of Marvel's characters are NOT back under their control. Spidey, FF (and Silver Surfer), X-Men/Wolverine are not. Daredevil (and Elektra) may not be. So, how about an article that delves into the rights that Marvel has handed out and the current status of said rights?

New Full Trailer for Frank Miller's SPIRIT - Jul 16, 2008 - 08:26am
I'm finding it hard to take something seriously that contains a character named 'Silken Floss'. It really looks like Miller can't figure out what he wants this film to be visually: it borrows heavily from Sin City, and it's very reminiscent of 300 as well. I'd give the trailer a 'meh'. Even with the visuals, it just doesn't look like it'll be an interesting enough flick to go see.

RUNAWAYS #30 - Jul 14, 2008 - 03:21pm
Personally, I intend to wait for issue #1 of volume 6 before jumping in. At this rate, it should only be a couple of years way.

DVD Review of The Fantastic Four; Complete First Season - Jul 14, 2008 - 03:20pm
" Premiering on the Cartoon Network the show has had a bit of a spotty broadcast history" No effing kidding. I never knew it was on, and by the time I did, I couldn't find it, so I never knew it was off. This is why bittorent rules the interwebs: so people can find stuff when network execs decide to be dumbasses.

Mania Manifesto: Top 8 Comic Book Video Games - Jul 08, 2008 - 06:46pm
"#7: Spider-Man 2 (Home Consoles)" Ultimate Spider-Man was a little better. "#4: X-Men Legends 2 (Home Consoles)" This game had plenty of its own bugs as well. One of my favorites was there was a Spider-Man arcade game with several characters, and it would zoom in and out from the action and stuff. I haven't played it in 15 years. And yes, Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction should be very high on this list.

Top Maniacal Rumors: Shazam-mess , Avengers Team & Super Survival - Jun 28, 2008 - 09:05am
The title will be Shazam because Marvel has the rights to the title Captain Marvel. Just like Marvel last year had to change one of their titles to The Order because they lost the rights to the previous title (can't recall what it was off the top of my head). A 300 prequel? Huh? I loved 300, but a prequel doesn't make sense, unless Frank Miller is just desperate to cash in. As for the Avengers lineup, Favreau simply confirmed what we knew all along based on the movies Marvel was already planning on making. I don't even see how this qualifies as a rumor.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK - Jun 14, 2008 - 03:46pm
"She says Louis was referring to the SS serum when he said Captain America." I'll believe her version of the story once I see the Arctic scene for myself.

Was This Hulk Really Necessary? - Jun 14, 2008 - 08:41am
"I think the real question here is: "Was This Article Really Necessary?" I agree. No matter how you slice it, you're talking about a 10' tall green goliath... it's a fictional character. The point is to suspend your disbelief and just accept it for what it is. Otherwise, what's the point of even writing for a site that is mostly about genre entertainment!? "Who wants to go to the movie and see a "cerebral" interpretation of the hulk." Umm, fyi, the writers who have been most heralded for their work on the Hulk over the years balanced both the "Hulk Smash" and the cerebral. Some of the best writing ever has been when they get into the Hulk's head. And yes, I did enjoy Ang Lee's Hulk in part because he tried something that was cerebral, knowing the potential of the character. But imo what brought the movie down what the crap with Banner's father... that just didn't work at all. And while I was wondering if I would be disappointed with Incredible Hulk, I went to see it last night and I very much enjoyed it as well. It's still flawed, but that's ok. Yes, it's better than Lee's Hulk, but they are both different takes on the same character - much like there have been many iterations of the Hulk over the years (gray, green; smart, dumb). And both films can both be enjoyed for how they go about it, regardless of whether each film fully succeeds.

First Teaser Trailer for PUNISHER - Jun 13, 2008 - 08:06pm
"And survey says... it looks like complete crap!" Yeah, it's only a minute, but it's a minute that looks like a minute in any of a thousand other action films. The Punisher needs something to set it apart, and it just doesn't look like it's found what that something is yet.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK - Jun 13, 2008 - 07:49pm
Got back from seeing Incredible Hulk a bit ago. Really enjoyed it. Much less subtle on the connections than Iron Man was. It makes me wonder what else might've been excised from this one had Iron Man bombed.

Top Maniacal Rumors: Iron Cheap, Raimi's Return & Beachy Turok - Jun 13, 2008 - 07:30pm
"The Cap rumor is being debunked by the producer Gale Anne Hurd." What possible reason could there be for the Arctic scene then? A scene which has footage in one of the trailers?

New Shoots Planned for VALKYRIE - Jun 05, 2008 - 02:53pm
"Cruise hasn't turned in a decent performance since Interview With the Vampire." Only my opinion, but I had serious reservations about The Last Samurai before I went to see it, and I really came away thinking Cruise gave a great performance. Certainly better than a number of other 'based on some level of historical fact' movies in recent years.

Christopher Lee Agrees to Return to MIDDLE EARTH - Jun 04, 2008 - 04:50pm
You know, the role of Bilbo apparently came down to Sir Ian Holm (77) and Sylvester McCoy (65). Now, being that McCoy is still my favorite Doctor, I would not be opposed to his playing Bilbo in The Hobbit if they need to recast. :)

New Shoots Planned for VALKYRIE - Jun 04, 2008 - 04:47pm
Should I still be looking forward to this film?

New Redband trailer for Coens' BURN - May 30, 2008 - 02:33pm
Red bands are picking up steam this summer, aren't they?

Game Review: IRON MAN for the Wii - May 20, 2008 - 02:06pm
I'm playing the PS2 version right now, and it's about on par with Hulk: Ultimate Destruction in terms of graphics, controls, enjoyment, etc: which is to say, it's a solid $30 investment, but don't expect an award winner.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN - May 18, 2008 - 12:18pm
I saw it yesterday. I though it was better than the first film, with both being in the B-/B range. It's no Lord of the Rings, but it holds its own just fine, imo. Dawn Treader was always my favorite as a child, so the fact that they've already started pre-production on it for 2010 release has my hopes up that these will continue to get better.

Weekly Book Buzz: Erotic Fantasy Art - May 05, 2008 - 01:17pm
Well, I guess WotC's apparently efforts to kill Dragonlance are working, as Margaret Weis' Amber and Blood is due out in hardcover tomorrow, and no mention of it here. But hey, the latest Eberron paperback gets a mention, so all is well! (/sarcasm)

Exclusive: New INDY Trailer For Iron Man? - May 01, 2008 - 10:46pm
New Indy trailer, new The Dark Knight trailer. Iron Man was AWESOME! And if you do not stay through the credits, don't bother going at all. :)

Two Minutes of IRON MAN - Apr 15, 2008 - 10:04am
So... bad site design and tons of page errors., my first post yesterday didn't actually get posted, can't edit my posts, stupid pop-up window for posting comments. Yeah, all is well. *insert eye roll*

Two Minutes of IRON MAN - Apr 15, 2008 - 10:03am
Test

New Updates for WOLVERINE - Apr 10, 2008 - 02:16pm
"but who the hell is Weapon 11" I'm not sure what they're up to, but during Morrison's run, it was written that Weapon X was meant to be the roman numeral X, thus Wolverine was Weapon 10. You can get more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weapon_Plus

Mania Exclusive Interview: Simon Pegg - Apr 01, 2008 - 12:33pm
Saw Run Fatboy Run on Sunday. Pegg and Azaria are a riot.

Running the Property Dispute Gauntlet - Mar 31, 2008 - 04:56pm
"I've mentioned elsewhere my suspicions about the Dabel Bros / Marvel deal - but have always tempered it with "no one is raising a stink about it so it probably wasn't that bad."" Well, to be honest about it, Marvel has no reason to complain, and I really do think that such behavior is beneath the Dabel's. I met them at SDCC, and I recall hearing a lot about how the bros were in meetings with Marvel at the time. At a guess, I'd say that's probably when the pooh started to hit the fan. "it feels like they got undercut." Perhaps. We'll probably never know for certain. DBPro went for the exposure that Marvel would give them, and in the end, they did get a lot published in that year or so. But I've heard stories that suggest that DBPro has never been on solid financial ground (beyond the fact that they change publishers every year), so it wouldn't surprise me if the are at least somewhat at fault here.

Running the Property Dispute Gauntlet - Mar 31, 2008 - 06:20am
The Dabels are nice guys (I've met and chatted with Les and Ernest), but their track record speaks for itself. I can only speak of their situation with Marvel, as I've been able to get more info about that particular partnership over all the others, but they seemed very happy with it... until something went wrong. Still, I don't think Marvel had the proverbial gun to the Dabel's collective head. "Raymond E. Feist's The Wood Boy, Tad Williams' The Burning Man" Issue #2 (of 2) of The Wood Boy was supposedly published in a special trade / one-shot with The Burning Man. I've never laid eyes on this, so I don't know if it was ever released. But if tit was, The Wood Boy was completed, albeit in a crappy manner.

Ian McKellen Responds to HOBBIT Prequels - Mar 26, 2008 - 10:05pm
"He's an idiot for not having contacted him yet." Yeah, it's idiocy to go contacting people about a movie that doesn't have a script from a company that is being sued *again* over previous films. Yeah, real idiocy there. *insert eye roll*

TROPIC THUNDER Trailer Online - Mar 18, 2008 - 07:52am
I really find Stiller as terribly unfunny most of the time - the last film I watched that he was in was Mystery Men - but I might have to give this one a chance.

Star Trek: New Voyages and the Nebula Conundrum - Mar 17, 2008 - 11:29am
There's no chance Paramount buys this with the intent of support it, Moz, not with a Trek film coming. In the end, they could try and shut this down as competition, even if it isn't for-profit, and they'd probably be well within their rights to do so.

WIZARD'S First Rule Cleared for Raimi - Mar 17, 2008 - 11:26am
I've never read the books, but I'll give it a chance. I recall a number of years back that there was talk of a Dragonriders of Pern series that never went anywhere. So, I hope this turns out well, simply for the sake of fantasy in general.

MUMMY Continues After Dragon Emperor? - Mar 11, 2008 - 07:56am
Thoughts of a Mummy 4 makes baby Jesus cry. Those stupid ads at the top of the page make baby Jesus cry too.

SECRET INVASION SAGA #1 - Mar 06, 2008 - 06:29am
I give Marvel credit: I think they're coming up with some pretty solid story ideas that are building upon each other. But one of the serious flaws I am seeing is the dreaded continuity. Some would say ignore continuity, but Marvel thrives upon it, so to discard it on a whim is silly. Take, for example, the situation with Black Bolt and Quicksilver: Quicksilver's story ran fairly well between the pages of X-Factor and the Silent War mini-series. Black Bolt, of course, was seen with Silent War as well, but it's been hard to figure out exactly where that series takes place with the events of Civil War & WWH. And nobody seems interested in straightening things out.

Don't Believe the Hype - Mar 05, 2008 - 06:39am
The Sagas try to condense the story with text telling you most of what's going along with key frames from the issues. So, I guess you could say they're a bit like the Handbooks.

Latest Trailer for IRON MAN - Feb 29, 2008 - 06:49am
I couldn't get it to load in Firefox (although right-clicking shows something Flash-based is there), but it's ok for me in IE. Direct link: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=29294971 And I'm pumped for this movie. Regardless of whether they get that shot with the tank to look right or not, it's the thought that counts. ;)

New Line Pulled into Warner Bros. - Feb 29, 2008 - 06:45am
Two weeks ago tomorrow, I was at a convention and was in line for an autograph signing for an hour chatting with a fellow who works for New Line. He said they expected to know what was going to happen in 2 weeks. Guess he was spot on. I don't think this really surprises anybody in the end though.

Update: AMPTP & WGA Reach Tentative Agreement! - Feb 09, 2008 - 10:02am
Looks like the writers are getting some of what they deserve. Good for them!

LOST: Premiere & Confirmed Dead - Feb 09, 2008 - 10:00am
"It explained NOTHING and gave you MORE MYSTERIES." This is why my wife dropped the show like a bad habit during the last season. Even if I sat down to watch a few minutes, and she would tell me what was going on, I could sit there and tell her the exact same thing you said, Merin: week in, week out, it was simply more and more questions with no answers.

WOLVERINE Shooting in Fangorn Forest? - Feb 08, 2008 - 06:41am
I just love how the first of the two 'tips' is so utterly useless: doesn't know they're filming the prequel to begin with, doesn't say *which* National Park they're filmed at (and LotR filmed at several, if not most or all, of NZ's national parks). The second was right on though, since those LotR bits mentioned were filmed in and around Queenstown. Damn, I really wish my wife and I were able to make that trip back to NZ like we wanted; it would've been around right now, and we would've gone to Queenstown again.

Woo's RED CLIFF International Trailer Online - Feb 02, 2008 - 01:19pm
Who's he playing then? Not that I consider IMDB.com to be a definitive source on anything, but in looking over the cast, I can't think of a role that's not already filled that would suit him.

Woo's RED CLIFF International Trailer Online - Feb 02, 2008 - 11:43am
"Cool. Dynasty Warriors the movie! I know thats not really the case but sure sounds like it." In a sense... Koei has been doing games about this period of Chinese history since 1989. if you've played Dynasty Warriors, you'll recognize the battle not by it's Western translation (Red Cliff), but by it's Eastern name: Battle of Chi Bi. "I guees this is the Chinese version of 300." Umm, no. Woo has been working on this for several years, well before 300 was started, for one. Two, it's not a SFX film. Three, while this movie will probably have it's fair share of fiction, you won't be seeing any weird ass men or creatures. "Anybody else notice that Chow Yun Fat isn't actually in this movie?" Chow Yun Fat dropped out and was replaced by Tony Leung. All things considered, for the character Leung is playing (Zhou Yu), it's for the best. Just by seeing faces flash by, and not really knowing any of the actors save Leung and Kaneshiro, I can still pick out who a few are going to be simply because I'm so familiar with the material (Zhang Fei and Guan Yu, in particular). Regardless of director, I'm looking forward to this. I fell in love with Chinese history, and this time period specifically (fall of the Han Dynasty), after my uncle introduced me to the original Romance of the Three Kingdoms game by Koei way back in 1990. With an independent theatre just up the street from me, I'll be at this one opening night.

Talking Torchwood - Jan 31, 2008 - 10:00am
"#10 So basically you hate it because you can see references or resemblances to other scifi shows or movies over the last twenty years of scifi movie and television history. Wow." Thanks for reading far too deeply into my post, because that isn't what I said at all. Wow to you too. I hate it because, regardless of the references, the episode was crap. The references just made it a bigger pile of crap. Such references can be done well, and they can be done poorly. Last of the Time Lords shows how it's done poorly. Take, for example, the Flash Gordon 'homage'. Davies felt the need to leave it open for future writers to bring back The Master. I get that. But The Master being left for dead isn't new in DW (or sci-fi for that matter), so why was such a scene needed at all? It not only is it a terrible scene, but they pick such an obvious homage that it looks more like a blatant rip-off. A homage respects the original material; this episode doesn't even bother... it just throws bits in from here and there because Davies can.

Talking Torchwood - Jan 30, 2008 - 11:03am
Peter Pan is in reference to the whole Doctor flying around and transforming crap, which was probably the worst part of the whole crappy episode. Say his name loudly and that will happen? My god, that's some of the worst sci-fi I've seen in years. Harry Potter. Ever seen that little rat-like thing that show up now and then? Doobie or whatever it's called? Yeah, 1000-shrunken CG Doctor... something else totally unnecessary to the story. The whole hand grabbing the ring from the ground is a direct ripoff of a scene from the Flash Gordon movie. If it's a homage, then Davies was no longer bothering to hide them any more. There were others, but I'm not about to go back and re-watch the episode; I'm still trying to burn the memory of it out of my brain to begin with. Oh, and lest I forget: the complete and utter bs that the Doctor whisper's something into Martha's ear so that a year hence everything falls into place. The Doctor knows exactly what the Master is going to do in a motherf*cking year? God, what nonsense and laziness. Truly, I want RTD to cut back on his scriptwriting. For every good episode he writes, he comes up with some real manure. And things were so promising at the end of Utopia, too.

Talking Torchwood - Jan 30, 2008 - 09:40am
"What is not to like?" Peter Pan, Harry Potter, Flash Gordon, among other things. By the time the episode was over, I wasn't sure if I had accidentally gotten my hands on a copy of Epic Movie.

Rise Up and Hear the Bells: The Return of Captain America - Jan 30, 2008 - 07:28am
"However, The New York Daily News already revealed the identity of the new Captain America." Well, it's not like it's been hard to guess from the start. Bru's had a great run on this book, but the new Cap reveal had all the suspense of a badly written slasher flick. His "reveal" in the X-Men: Deadly Genesis was just as easy to guess from the start, although the writing on Cap is 1000x better than that X-Men mini.

Talking Torchwood - Jan 30, 2008 - 07:24am
Between the unevenness of the first series of Torchwood, and the crash and burn that was the finale of Doctor Who series 3, I'm not getting my expectations too high any more. So, I really enjoyed this episode, and I'd give it a B. "And if you were wondering what happened then you weren't watching - in the season 1 finale Jack is clearly shown using the Doctor's hand to find the Tardis." Umm, that would be the point of the review, jackdavinci: if you haven't seen Doctor Who, you have nfc what the hand is about and you have nfc where Jack went at the end of series 1. And please don't bring up that damn throwaway line. It was just that: a throwaway line. And so many have taken it hook, line, and sinker. Gah.

Jimmy Bennett is Young Kirk in STAR TREK - Jan 29, 2008 - 10:00pm
"Anyway I suspect that if the story is going to include a young Kirk then they are probably going to deal with this in the the movie" I doubt it. But I'll do you one better: the Romulans try to kill kirk when he's a kid, or before he's born... or they try several times. God I'm going to hate this movie. I have no reason whatsoever to want to see it, beyond the fact that it's Trek. And after Nemesis, even that isn't good enough.

Jimmy Bennett is Young Kirk in STAR TREK - Jan 29, 2008 - 05:54pm
By all that is unholy, why the hell do we need to see Kirk as a boy!?

Forte Beams Crew in STAR TREK - Jan 28, 2008 - 10:11am
The problem with that argument is that the last few Trek films were made for Trek fans; this film won't be. It will be made for the widest audience, which is why they've recast with all young actors. I don't like the story concept. I don't like going back and 'rebooting' or recasting. I don't like some of the casting. After the clusterfucks that were Enterprise and Nemesis, it's just dumb to go back with another prequel and use the Romulans (Nero? Fucking NERO!? Of all the names...). Well, the Borg traveled in time to change the past, and the Romulans wanted to replace Picard... so we'll combine those two ideas into something even more disgusting! Yeah, that'll sell! Nothing so far is adding up to a good movie, much less a good Trek movie. Gah, it's Monday morning. Somebody get me a beer.

Forte Beams Crew in STAR TREK - Jan 28, 2008 - 07:07am
"I think having him do a cameo would a level of goofyness and probably end up making the storyline more convoluted than it needs to be." Based on the rumors of the story for this film, it can't get much goofier.

11 Movies Saved by Historical Inaccuracy - Jan 25, 2008 - 01:41pm
"Pretty funny piece." Wait, this is a humor piece? I can't find anything funny in it.

11 Movies Saved by Historical Inaccuracy - Jan 25, 2008 - 08:26am
The big problem with some of these choices is that they were NEVER advertised as being based on historical events (such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), or no claim was ever made to historical accuracy (300). Unlike other pieces of historical crap, like The Patriot and Braveheart. It's movies like King Arthur, that try and pass themselves off as historically accurate, that really piss me off. Even movies that are based on recent history, such as A Beautiful Mind, care more about casting a good looking actress rather than somebody who actually looks the part - guess what, casting director, Jennifer Connelly ain't from anywhere near from El Salvador!

WGA and Marvel, Lionsgate Sign Interim Deals - Jan 25, 2008 - 08:20am
"An "Antman" movie? Really? Why? " Because they want to do Avengers with the old lineup, rather than realizing that a Antman movie will do worse than Catwoman, regardless of quality. As for the X-Men films... I liked that the first two were more cerebral, because I think that's an aspect of X-Men comics that's often overlooked. I certainly could've gone with different casting for some of the characters though. Oh, and I hope deals like the ones with Marvel and Lionsgate keep coming. Maybe it'll kill the need for the AMPTP to exist in the first place.

Edward Norton: "Utterly Unrelated" to Previous HULK - Jan 23, 2008 - 03:45pm
I'm really hoping that this one does well. Norton appears to fit the part so much better than Bana ever could, as much as I enjoy Bana's work to date. I liked Ang Lee's Hulk for the most part, although they should've gone with an actual villain, rather than that cluster that was having Banner's father as the villain. Still, I think this is a good way to go, to just hit the ground running and not worry about whether this movie connects to Ang Lee's.

Update: Ledger's Autopsy Is Inconclusive - Jan 22, 2008 - 10:03pm
"Again I didn't mean any disrespect to the dead, and I thank Smeg and iceman for a fresh perspective. " Well, to be honest, the folks on this forum have been far more civil and kind about this than I've seen elsewhere. Nobody has spouted off with something along the lines of "he was a drug addict, who cares?", which is more indicative of the person making the comment than Ledger himself. Still, many perspectives are useful, and many have brought excellent points to this discussion. I just wish the media would quit with the hype and just report the facts when they get the facts. Most people deserve better than what the media gives them when it comes to the reporting of deaths.

Update: Ledger's Autopsy Is Inconclusive - Jan 22, 2008 - 07:54pm
"Perspective is needed." Yes, it is. But the fact remains that, unlike most of the thousands that die every day, Ledger had a face that most of us recognized. Which means, whether we actually knew him or not, we feel a bit more empathy for him than most nameless deaths. It's a sad fact of human nature, but that's the way it works.

Update: Ledger's Autopsy Is Inconclusive - Jan 22, 2008 - 02:48pm
"I will wait to cast judgement, but regardless, I just can never understand how these celebs can let their addictions become life threatening." Let's not jump to conclusions here. One interviewee on Headline News said he interviewed Ledger 6 weeks ago, and he seemed to be out of sorts then, with Ledger apparently saying that playing the Joker had actually gone so far as to cause him to lose tons of sleep, etc. So, I think it's only fair to Ledger's memory, when he's never had reports of such problems in the past, to give him the benefit of the doubt here.

HD STAR TREK Teaser Online - Jan 22, 2008 - 11:09am
"Then again, you have smeg for brains..." And I don't like shit for movies. Or shit for concepts for movies. The concept for this film is shit. And I say that as a life-long Trekkie. :)

First Set Photo for WOLVERINE Online - Jan 22, 2008 - 11:08am
And now the local tours (some of which I've been on) can proudly proclaim to be for both Lord of the Rings and Wolverine. And yeah, the photo of the log cabin being built is also floating around. The physical location is likely not far from where the refugees of Edoras fought off the wargs. ;)

HD STAR TREK Teaser Online - Jan 22, 2008 - 07:02am
I just can't say I'm excited about this film in any way, shape, or form. I'm not. I don't want a Trek reboot. As much as I love the original cast, I don't need them recast (much less the fact that some of the casting is shit... Karl Urban as Bones!?). And if the rumored plot of this film is accurate, I'm going to scream bloody murder.

8 New Photos for PRINCE CASPIAN - Jan 21, 2008 - 03:33pm
I don't recall with this book how the kids gain access to Narnia, only that each time, they have to find another "wardrobe" to access the world. I'll try and re-read the first couple of books before going to see this in theatres.

RANT: Have You Ever Had a Friend... - Jan 21, 2008 - 09:50am
"I`m also actually surprised so many in the US like this show." I think many in the US are a) Whovians, or b) desperate for some sci-fi beyond what our networks offer, and DW & TW help fill that need. Me? I grew up on Doctor Who, so I'll pretty much watch anything Who-related, including Sarah Jane Adventures (which was pretty good, for being a kids show). "i'm actuall a little dissapointed that so many people in America or otherwise seem to have a problem with the homosexuality, in Torchwood." I don't have a problem with the homosexuality in TW. I guess if there's any problem I have, it's that Davies has a habit of making it over the top. I mean, in most small-group situations, like TW, you'd expect perhaps one gay or lesbian character. But with TW, *everybody* is gay/lesbian/"omnisexual". It's really beating everybody over the head with it when we 'get it'. That said, I'm still watching. :)

RANT: Have You Ever Had a Friend... - Jan 21, 2008 - 06:34am
I don't get why you wouldn't watch something just because somebody else can't stfu about it. It seems like you just aren't as much of fan of whatever the topic of discussion is if you can't handle others talking about it frequently. I really enjoyed "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang", the premiere episode for series 2.

WB Launches 10,000 BC Site - Jan 21, 2008 - 06:28am
"they uncover a Lost Civilization." Well, this would at least explain the... well, level of civilization that's seen at times in the trailer. I'm still not sure if I have any interest in seeing this. Actually, no, I don't have any interest in this.

Lake Placid 2 Unrated - Jan 19, 2008 - 06:55pm
In other words, get me a vidocap of the topless chicks, and I'll pass on the rest. :D

Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight - Jan 18, 2008 - 12:28pm
"It doesn't put itself out there as anything other than just a D&D game put out on paper." The irony of that statement is that Autumn Twilight was basically written based on the first set of Dragonlance game modules. It wasn't until about halfway through Winter Night that Weis & Hickman caught up with the modules, and basically took control of the story from there, leaving the remaining modules to adapt the books. Jean Rabe gets a bad rep for what she wrote, but much of that (such as the Dragon Overlords) was also dictated by the whims of the game designers at the time.

Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight - Jan 18, 2008 - 09:30am
I'm a long-time Dragonlance fan, and while I know I'm going to be disappointed by the animation, I'm hoping enough of the core of the story is there, along with the voice acting, to make it a worthwhile purchase. Some notes about the film: They originally intended to do the entire film in CG, but after getting back some test animation, decided to go traditional save some bits, like the dragons and draconians. They probably should've just done traditional animation for the entire film. Yes, the characters are archetypal; that was intentional as DL was the first book series based on a D&D setting. Also, apparently Paramount wanted to just do the fist half of Autumn Twilight as a film, instead of the entire movie. It probably would've been a better choice, since the book deserves 3 hours to tell the tale, rather than 90 minutes. The fact that this movie is PG-13 is a big plus, imo. Nothing worse than animated stuff with no blood when people are being ripped apart, etc. They went for the level of animation that fits the story, rather than cheapening it.

MRC & Spyglass Make Deals with WGA - Jan 15, 2008 - 06:08am
It seems the arrogance of the AMPTP is never-ending.

Uwe Boll Responds to DUNGEON SIEGE Bombing - Jan 15, 2008 - 06:07am
"but he can do that no longer now that (German tax shelters have) been banned" And there was much rejoicing!

WB Grabs a BUCKET of Cash - Jan 14, 2008 - 11:03am
"I just have better taste in movies then you do." Thanks for the laugh, I needed it. Now, head back to your rubber-walled room before you hurt yourself.

WB Grabs a BUCKET of Cash - Jan 14, 2008 - 06:38am
"So are you trying to say that because i didn't like bored of the rings then my life must be a lonely one?" Well, I certainly get the impression from your name and complaining that Peter Jackson must've rejected your pitifully written love letters, and now you're lashing out in response. If you thought a Uwe Boll movie was more entertaining than LotR, then it's pretty obvious you have such low standards that you can't be taken seriously... ever.

Wood Confirms Plot Differences for Two HOBBITS - Jan 13, 2008 - 02:49pm
"Instead why not make a film(s) that details what happened in the first and second ages as written in Tolkien's 'Silmarillion'?" Somebody would have to find out who has the film rights to The Silmarillion. Because if they still reside with the Tolkien Estate, we won't get a film any time soon.

Wood Confirms Plot Differences for Two HOBBITS - Jan 12, 2008 - 08:31am
I think they can pull off with Ian Holm what they did at the beginning of X-Men 3, where they used sfx to de-age McKellan and Stewart. As much as I love Lord of the Rings, both books & films, I'm not really keen on the idea of a 'bridging' movie. And snallygaster hit the head on the real problem: there's no single narrative that can truly drive a story. If you look at the timeline in the Appendices, you've got bits like Sauron openly declaring himself in Mordor (he arrived just after the end of The Hobbit), Balin entering Moria, Gandalf visiting Bilbo now and then, Aragorn hanging out in Lorien, and Gandalf and Aragorn trying to find Gollum. That's not a lot to go on to achieve a cohesive story.

Schreiber Playing Creed in WOLVERINE? - Jan 12, 2008 - 08:23am
"Because the guy has jumped into the elite actors of America after 300, as fickle as movie-goers are today, he is above a non-starring role in a mutant movie." Uhh, I'm thinking you're a little off in your take, craigtnelson. Jackman is still a bigger star than Butler. And according to IMDb, Butler is already filming a movie, which would probably make him unavailable for Wolverine. But the whole "he's is above a non-starring role"... what crevice did you pull that out of? Sometimes, the simple, logical answer is likely the accurate one.

The Next Big Bust - Jan 09, 2008 - 06:53am
I'm not a huge fan of the major, company-wide crossovers, as I don't buy everything, so it does (regardless of what Marvel claims) make it difficult to keep up. But the key, and this is subjective, is whether it's a worthwhile and well-told tale. Civil War started out great but ended with a whimper. WWH was so far over the top, that the end result seemed to be inevitable that it too would finish with a whimper. Messiah Complex (and it's predecessor, Endangered Species) are fine... if you're already buying all the books. And going back a ways, I always loved Age of Apocalypse. But, when I went back last year to reread the entire saga, I found that it had far too many titles and issues to really keep me engaged as it did when it first came out.

Update: WB Is Now Blu-Ray Exclusive, HD-DVD Responds - Jan 07, 2008 - 07:19am
"Dismissing the failures as "they were never serious contenders" is silly." Why? Because you say it is? I dismiss the N-Gage the same way. It never stood a chance. Give Nokia credit for trying, but the fact remains. "Are either of those really positive things to say about Sony?" It doesn't matter if it's positive or negative against Sony, as it's simply public perception. Does the Laserdisc reflect poorly upon MCA because it never took off? That's the problem here, the fact that people are so damn selective about what failures reflect upon a company, and which ones don't. And yes, I think that video game consoles very much apply. They may not be new media (but in the case of Nintendo with the GameCube, which did use a new media), but if someone wants to complain about Sony, people seem happy enough to lump them right in. "The Mini-Disc was a failure. It IS still around" If it's still around, I cannot see how it's a failure. Can anybody else? Is supplanting the previous media format the only way a new format can succeed in your eyes? "Give them credit for being backstabbing greedy bastards if Blu-Ray succeeds?" Again, on this single comment, you seem to be holding Sony to a standard that you are not holding everybody else to. "smegforbrain (should I now make the immature crack about your handle?)" The fact you even mentioned it already proves how immature you are. It'll obviously make you feel better about yourself and your posts. So why hold back now?

Let Uncle Sam Buy Your Digital TV - Jan 07, 2008 - 07:03am
I'm curious to know how aware people are of the situation and what's going to happen. There was talk about whether cable companies would be involved with handing these boxes out to customers. But that still doesn't cover the people who get their tv from antenna only, and those folks are not going to be happy about having to buy a box just to watch over-the-air signals.

Update: WB Is Now Blu-Ray Exclusive, HD-DVD Responds - Jan 06, 2008 - 10:00am
"betamax, Sony's attempt at a different kind of CD, then the mini-disc, and most recently the UMD." The mini-disc and UMD were never serious contenders. Betamax, for being the failure, was considered the better product (much like some say HD-DVD is). But, as I said, this whole thing is laughable. When HD-DVD dies, nobody is going to hold it against MS and Toshiba have folks have done with Sony & Betamax. And nobody seems to care about the hand Sony had with the CD. It's just downright pathetic. As I said, EVERY COMPANY HAS FAILURES. Why is this so difficult for some of you to grasp? Why are some of you so anal with Sony and not other companies? You talk about Sony fan boys, but you seem to have some serious grudge against Sony that has no basis in logic or reason. "but again, the track record is pretty bad." See above. You want to ignore their incredible successes against their moderate (if that) failures. What a joke. I fully expect that folks like you, Merin, will utterly fail to give Sony credit should Blu-Ray win out over HD-DVD. After all, who cares about the successes when it's so easy to focus on the failures?

Update: WB Is Now Blu-Ray Exclusive, HD-DVD Responds - Jan 05, 2008 - 10:49pm
"Merin has no plans to: buy an HD TV" Don't knock it till you've tried it. As I said, I got an HDTV recently, and it's not even 1080p, and it has been worth every penny. Even for just regular channels, the display is better than SDTV. But once you get to watch stuff in HD? Yeah, you never want to go back to a SD channel ever again. Oh, and Gauley, would you get over the whole Betamax garbage? That was 25 freakin years ago. Since then, Sony has been involved with the creation of the CD, and then they had the PSX and PS2. The history of electronics, indeed all inventions, is replete with failures. Yet I don't see anybody whinging about MCA and the Laserdisc. Or Nintendo and the VirtuaBoy. But people are hung up on the @#$% Betamax. I don't get it.

Update: WB Is Now Blu-Ray Exclusive, HD-DVD Responds - Jan 04, 2008 - 04:59pm
"It has nothing to do with Microsoft" It has everything to do with Microsoft when they artificially keep the 'war' going by throwing money at Paramount & DreamWorks. For all the bitching and moaning, whether you want HD-DVD or Blu-Ray or not, the Sony-backed product is going to win the war. Either way, I just bought my first HDTV less than 2 months ago, and I only went 720p, so even though I want a PS3, I'm not going to be making the jump to Blu-Ray any time soon.

The 10 Most Awesome Movies Hollywood Ever Killed - Jan 04, 2008 - 07:13am
Nice edit job on the whole Hobbit thing.
