Jaden Smith, son of Will & Jada Pinkett Smith, has joined the cast of The Day the Earth Stood Still, says the Hollywood Reporter. The young star who debuted opposite his dad in Pursuit of Happyness will be appearing as the rebellious Jacob, the 8-year-old stepson of scientist Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) who first makes contact with the humanoid alien Klaatu. He joins Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm and Kathy Bates. Scott Derrickson is directing the Fox remake, based on a screenplay by David Scarpa.
Plot Summary: A remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic about a humanoid alien named Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) who arrives on Earth accompanied by an indestructible, heavily armed robot and a warning to world leaders that their continued aggression will lead to annihilation by species watching from afar. Jacob (Smith) and stepmother Helen (Connelly) get caught up in Klaatu's mission, coming to understand the ramifications of his being a self-described "friend to the Earth."
The Day the Earth Stood Still will hit theaters Dec. 12, 2008.
