Will Smith, his son Jaden Smith and director M. Night Shyamalan are set to travel far into the future for a post-apocalyptic tale, with Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad announcing today the Smith duo will star in an untitled sci-fi adventure. Shyamalan and Will Smith will produce with James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith and Ken Stovitz, Smith's partners at Overbrook Entertainment. The screenplay is by M. Night Shyamalan and Gary Whitta.

Set 1,000 years into the future, a young boy navigates an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.

"Night is an outstanding filmmaker who has a tremendous vision for this science-fiction adventure story," says Columbia's Belgrad. "and we couldn't be more excited to be working again with Jaden after our experiences on 'The Pursuit of Happyness' and 'The Karate Kid.' We're thrilled to have the two of them together on this project."

"The chance to make a scary, science-fiction film starring Jaden and Will is my dream project." says Shyamalan.

Will Smith really wants his kids to be famous whether you like it or not. I enjoy Smiths movies but Shyamalans record of late has been less than stellar. Hopefully this will be the project to get him outta his slump.

Right now, after turning out turd after turd in recent years, I'm sure any project that gets a green light under his direction is a dream project for MNS. He's turned out a few box office, as well as critical, bombs over the last few years. I'm really surprised to see that he's getting money for another project. He started out so strong but seems to go further south with every picture.

The plot sounds kind of like "The Road" set further in the future. Agree with Shasta, maybe the Smiths are just the ticket to get MNS back on track.

Yeah not exactly a sterling record from MNS as of late. I don't care for the Smiths one or the other, no love but no hate either. I will wait patiently for a trailer before saying much, the premise sounds ok and like something that I may like. So I'll give them the benefit of doubt for now

Well every star has to have a moment of WTF did I just do? This Shasta, Shymalanadingdong has had a decent film since Sith Sense.  Everyone of his movies have been a stinking pile of nonsese.  This is going to be a double whammy of bad film.

I'm in the wait and see category as well.  Everyone has their opinion of directors.  I haven't really watched much of Night's last few films due to no interest.  Then again I love Will Smith but I've skipped on a couple of his last projects in recent memory too.  I'm sure if it's something he'd bring his kid into that he has to have a strong belief in the story and script.  And saying that I hope it is a strong story and script.  I'd love for Night to bounce back with a Home Run.

You are correct shasta but you have to admit having a dad who is one of the biggest box office draws around today certainly helps.  He surprised everyone with the karate kid so you never know.

I'm also a Wait and See-er. MNS started of his career with great innovation but slowly went into a rut of doing the same suprise ending thing over and over again IMHO. I'm sure there is probably more in his well that is great and hopefully his most recent critical and financial downer The Last Airbender will make him drop the bucket deep to get some fresh water for the Smith family. They seem to have faith in him. They could afford to get just about anybody for one of their movies.

@ Wacko: Unbreakable wasnt too bad though, right? ha, I know how bad Shyamalans work has been but I cant help but feel for the guy. Smith even considering working with him is very lucky and I am sure he knows that. Just hoping maybe some positive vibes his way might make for a good flick so hopefully I can finally get my moneys worth! HA!

@Hobbs: You know I didnt see the Karate kid but I heard he was actually quite good in it. Doesnt surprise me considering Will Smith is a great talent as well. I just think it seems like the Smith clan really wants their kids to be famous whether the public wants them to or not. It is nice though to see they are actually talented kids.

Well, I can say I probably won't be paying to see this in the theater.
