Wow! Just WOW! This is an amazing idea that came out of nowhere. A pleasant surprise. Im obviously down for this, but I do hope that Snyder will still be able to concentrate on the DC stuff. We need him!!

Breaking News: Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300) is developing a new Star Wars film for Disney, based on the Seven Samurai, and it is outside of both the trilogies.
If you think about it, it all comes full circle. A Star Wars filmed based on another Akira Kurosawa project is the natural route to go. After all Episode IV, A New Hope, is based on Kurosawa’s Hidden Fortress.
Vulture, who had the exclusive, had this to report: “He is in fact developing a Star Wars project for Lucasfilm that is set within the series’ galaxy, though parallel to the next trilogy. It will be an as-yet-untitled Jedi epic loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai, with the ronin and katana being replaced by the Force-wielding knights and their iconic lightsabers”. Check out the full story here.
So when will this story take place? Will it be before the prequels? Will it be after Return of the Jedi? If the story were to follow the Seven Samurai there would be seasoned Jedi in the lot. That would ear mark it for time before the prequels. Yet, it could be about a band of Jedi in hiding after the events of Order 66 thus placing it before Episode iV.
Another thing to consider is Snyder’s work on Man of Steel. If the film literally takes off will he be roped in for a sequel? Will Disney still want him if the Man of Steel flops? Disney has to yet confirm or deny Snyder’s involvement in a new Star Wars project. We here at Mania will keep watching for all the latest.
UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter has reported this from statement Zack Snyder's reps: “While he is super flattered because he is a huge fan, Zack is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars. He is currently in post on his two films, Man of Steel and 300: Battle of Artemisia.”

The source article says it will be post Return of the Jedi. Maybe it runs parallalel with the new trilogy.
This universe is so vast and ripe for many tales. I love it and as a big fan of Snyder it really gets my juices flowing.
At the same time I agree with violator. He seems destined to play a big role in the DC movieverse so just make sure you don't sskimp on one in favor of the other. The DCU needs all the attention it can get
I'd take a new Star Wars movie over any DC project, nomatter how good. Don't see why we can't have both though. I'm also hoping you're correct about the post Jedi setting Hanso (Less risk of unwanted characters returning).
I see no problem with letting other directors develop material outside of the 9 main volumes. I think the Seven Samurai theme, while having been re-molded many times, would be a neat concept within the Star Wars universe. I'm interested to see where this one goes.
