While wrapping up the promotional circuit for his upcoming fantasy Sucker Punch, director Zack Snyder sat down with the Los Angeles Times to discuss his next major genre project, Superman. Or rather The Man of Steel, the long-rumored title for the next Supes adventure which Snyder confirms to be the likely name even if it has yet to be finalized by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The helmer once again tells fans that the film will be rebooting the iconic superhero, much like executive producer Christopher Nolan provided with Batman Begins, and that there won't be references to previous Superman films in the franchise.

"In every aspect of design and of story. The whole thing is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies.”

Snyder also added that he hopes to provide fans with an official look at the new Superman costume before any leaks hit the web and that he's excited about some upcoming casting additions when asked about recent rumors about Kevin Costner and Viggo Mortensen being cast for the roles of Jonathan "Pa" Kent and General Zod, respectively.

“There’s more [casting] to come and I think it’s consistent in its … awesomeness.”

OK, that answers my biggest question because I thought it was going to follow even if loosely the first 2 films. Now my new biggest question is if he's planning on tackling his origin once again. I hope not but if he does since it's a reboot make it an abbreviated version ala Incredible Hulk. Then let's get to the meat of the story

I guess the best thing about this for me is that it does away with the superbrat

CaptAmerica04 3/17/2011 7:44:28 AM

I agree with everything you said, Wiseguy.  No superbrat, and PLEASE do a quick summation of the origin.  We don't need to hear it again.  The four people who see this that don't know his origin story can just quietly ask the person sitting next to them in the theater.

Also, one other request/question:  Are they still gonna use John Williams' iconic score?!  Cuz they should, or it just won't feel right.  Distance yourself from the other movies all you like, but don't waste that beautiful, perfect music.

MrGarabaldi 3/17/2011 8:26:38 AM

Sounds promising!!  I totaly agree, get rid of the super brat, and please, have a different villan.  Maybe Brainiac AND Bizarro?  Also, CAP you are right on about the theme music.

silversurfer 3/17/2011 8:27:58 AM

I think getting away from that music is something that should happen. I love the music, let me be clear, but if you're looking making your own mark on it, then let it be with a different theme of music. It should be heroic, but updated....

As much as I love Williams' iconic music I agree that they need to get away from it. They definitely need a strong soundtrack, but using Williams' music will only draw people back to the original films. There's absolutely no reason to do an origin story unless Zack's planning on changing the story a little. Just show the backstory in the opening credits. In fact, get the guy who di  The Incredible Hulk's opening to do this movie's opening.

I'm still not crazy about Zod, because even if you're doing a new story using Zod willl draw people back to Superman II. It's a mistake IMHO (which doesn't count for anything anyway! ).

Origin story haters need to realize that people were asking for the same thing when Batman Begins was announced, and that movie was certainly not boring or a mistake so relax and let these guys do their jobs.  It's been over 30yrs since the origin of Superman was told so I think it's about time to do it again.  WIth regard to the Incredible Hulk, it was only 4yrs so yeah, skip the intro, but look at spiderman, they are doing the high school thing again so it's obvious that with most reboots, the idea is to tell a different origin and set the stage for a new franchise.  I don't care what they do as long as it's good, but I hope some of you don't get too hung up on the no origin thing because it really can be the best part of any superhero's story.  The more I hear of this the more I think they can't get away from telling a new origin, the casting of a youngish Martha and the rumours of Costner as Pa, these folks aren't seniors so it only makes sense that even if they do appear as older folks at some point in the movie, the casting idea is geared toward showing them as younger adults with perhaps a toddler or teenage Clark.  The Fact that the leading man is only 27 also tells me that they want to show a beginning to his life as a superhero.  All I can say is trust Zack and Chris to give us the best Superman since the 70's!!

Wiseguy 3/17/2011 9:01:03 AM

Yeah but before Batman Begins there wasn't a Batman origin movie so it isn't the same thing

rogue188 3/17/2011 9:06:55 AM

They changed the music for Batman, and it worked. A total reboot is what is needed. That was the failure of Bryan Singer in not doing his own movie, instead of referencing Superman as done before.

flinshadytoo 3/17/2011 9:14:27 AM

I agree with Rogue 188, before the new batman I couldn't think of anything batman related without the danny Elfman score, then along came Hans zimmer & it just blew me away, the dark knight theme is now my fav, so it let them do it all, I love the williams superman theme but let's just wait and see shall we?

violator14 3/17/2011 9:22:42 AM

"...it's consistent with its.... awesomeness!!"  Nuff said!!!  I really could care less about any story or soundtrack. I know Zack Snyder is just gonna blow our heads clean off with this film. Im just gonna buckle myself in, and enjoy the awesomeness.
