Director Zack Snyder has posted his thoughts on wrapping up filming for Watchmen courtesy of the official website. In the blog, he also released a new screenshot, which you can see on the left. The upcoming adaptation of the Alan Moore graphic novel stars Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Carla Gugino, Stephen McHattie and Matt Frewer. Scribes David Hayter and Alex Tse penned the screenplay for Snyder.

I promise to refrain from getting too sentimental, but I want to take a moment to say thanks to the Watchmen cast & crew. You have all been phenomenal. It has been quite an experience and I could not have done it without the hard work and determination of each and every one of you. A film adaptation of Watchmen has been in the works for almost 20 years and thanks to you, it is finally in the can. It has been such a pleasure to be surrounded by a team that is so dedicated and that has given 110% each and every day. I am extremely grateful for the level of attention to detail put forth by each department to capture all of the texture that makes Watchmen the incredibly unique property that it is. Although we still have a lot of work to do in post, the shoot has been an experience I will not soon forget!

Thank you,

Zack

P.S. While I'm in the process of thanking people, I figure it's a good time to say thanks to the Watchmen fans for all of their continued support. Since the crew got wrap gifts, I figured you deserved a little something as well. So, to bring a little closure to the previous "Storyboard" blog, I've included a frame from the film that shows what it looks like when it all comes together. Thanks!

Watchmen will hit theaters March 6, 2009.

I could never get into the Watchmen when I was younger, my friend had the trade, and I've attempted many times and I don't intend to either for economical reasons but I do intend seeing this movie just because Snyder's attached to it. This pic, by the way, looks cool as sh!t.

I know nothing about this comic so I do not go into this with any preconceived ideas or notions and by the sound of it, that seems to be the best way of going into it...So don't go spoiling it for me and telling me what is good about it and what is not, then again I pretty sure that's asking for too much lol
Now let's see how long the delay will be because of the law suit...

I read it for the first time back in college, 'round '89 or so. It had a different way of looking at Superheros...making them more human and having faults. I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to seeing how it translates to film. So far the screenshots I've seen have the right ambiance.

This might be one of the times that I wish I hadn`t read the source material before seeing the movie, because I know there will be points in the movie where I`ll be like, "Why didn`t they or where is that part...?" There are so many damn layers in Watchmen that it all won`t be in there and if it is, it will only be glimpses. I`ll just have to hold my tongue and enjoy.

Yeah Pony, that happened for me with 30 Days of Night.....my fried had the series, so I read them before going to see the movie, then I was disappointed with the movie. I haven't read the Watchmen, so I will just go in ignorrant and hopefully enjoy it. I just watched 300 again last night, so I think I will like Watchmen. Zack Snyder has a natural eye and mind for making movies.

Yeah, he seems to because I watched Dawn of the Dead again last week and while it was just a zombie flick, the movement of the movie was still pretty good. 300 kicks ass, especially on Blu-Ray.

I agree with you guys about Snyder, which is one of the primary reasons I'm looking forward to this film. But the book was way too slow and, I hate to keep repeating it, overhyped. The movie I'm guessing will be much better cause the pace will have to be picked up and some of the fat cut out, unless they want to do a 4 hour film.

well, I HAVE read the WATCHMEN... and it properly blew my young and impressionable mind. I had the benefit of waiting for each issue, with baited breath, as the story intensified and unfolded. it was truly a great time -- epic really -- for comics and comic lovers. (with that book and "the dark knight returns" comics, and now the world of science fiction/genre storytelling was forever changed and positively influenced...)

years ago, when it was announced that Terry Gilliam was going to do WATCHMEN, I was tremendously excited. of course, money, technology, etc. wasn't right, and Gilliam was responsible enough to flat out say that he couldn't/wouldn't make it unless it was done right. when he tried, it fell apart (etc.).

with Zack Snyder I feel like, "y'know, whatever." I like that the guy has balls and that he makes movies with punch and violence (because there's plenty of that in WATCHMEN), but my hope was always that he (or any director) also capture the real emotional heart and thematic impact that's within the WATCHMEN's story.

can he do it? was it in the version of the script that he filmed? does it matter in a world/at a time when visuals are everything?

y'know, whatever.

I hope so. I really do. 'cause for those who HAVEN'T read it, this may be their only way into the story, and it would truly be a shame if it came down to all splash and no artistic impact or integrity.

but I've long since grown up -- being 36 -- to care whether or not Zack Snyder, or anyone for that matter, "does the movie right" of one of the best comic book stories ever. it's like trying to write about the feelings of a Beatles album. you can write about it for days and never come close to what it triggers when the music plays or the images that the words create.

comics are just as powerful a medium, and that power was captured in the WATCHMEN, while also making a pretty powerful statement as well. it would be ridiculous to expect that Snyder, or anyone, could harness all that into one two hour movie. I remain hopeful, and I am also keeping away from his 'blogs, and too much other junk out there so I can go in and enjoy the movie for itself, in it's own right -- if it's an enjoyable movie.

(basically, you won't hear me saying "he raped my youth" or whatever if it doesn't turn out. it's an effort, let's hope it wasn't in vain.)

(*the cast is pretty promising too, as is that screen shot.)

amateurscientist: you hit the nail on the head. A 140 minute movie will never be able to capture the freshness of a comic series from 85-86. I love the Watchmen and always will because even back then, I wanted to live in the world that was being depicted to experience Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons' world firsthand, to smell the curry, eat that hamburger at the end of the book, or even read the Black Freighter comic. It fascinated my eleven year old mind and although some of that fascination has faded, I remain a faithful fan. I have written many times over how this would make a great miniseries on cable or a trilogy if moved to film, but the general public's unawareness of such a groundbreaking comic would most likely thwart any sort of trilogy (break the 12 chapters into three 4-chapter movies). If only, if only. But I like Snyder's style and the pics that have been coming up have been inspiring. All I can say to those who HAVE NOT READ THE COMIC, don't read it until after the movie then see the movie again to truly gauge the experience. Doing it this route will allow you to maintain your expectations to a minimal without being disappointed. I believe someone else stated this on this board a while back, but I agree with that person if it was indeed on this baord. anyway, back to work and back to markiing my calender.

And when the hell is Give Me Liberty going to be made into a cable miniseries? HBO all the way or bust!

Watchmen, along with Cerebus, are only the two greatest comics in history. I'm glad Snyder is handling this picture.
