Stanislaw Lem, who wrote the novel Solaris, passed away yesterday in Poland.

He was "one of the most popular science fiction authors of recent decades to write in a language other than English, and his works were translated from Polish into more than 40 other languages. His books have sold 27 million copies."

His other works included Hospital of the Transfiguration, The Invincible, The Cyberiad, The Star Diaries, and The Futurological Congress.

Lem's writing focused on "new scientific discoveries and the evolution of man and technology."

While I have never read the original novel, I still feel that "Solyaris" was a much, much better (IMHO!) sci-fi film than "2001". Indeed, Tarkovsky directed "Solyaris" as a reaction to the cold, distant "2001". From what I've heard, Lem wasn't pleased with the adaptation - but still, the film is brilliant on its own merits.

That being said, I also feel that Soderbergh's version was also a completely, under-appreciated master-piece. Clearly more accesible than Tarkovsky's version (who had a knack for excruciatingly long static takes).

Anyway, I suppose I've just talked myself into checking out Lem's novels. From everything I've read, the man was a fantastic writer.

I haven't read anything from him either, but sometimes this is how to discover new great works.

berzerk,

You should only the Cinescape entries two days older or more. Your blood pressure will be better, and you'll live longer.

I never read the book, but did watch the Soderbergh version because it was free with the copy of another DVD I bought - actually it was cheaper to buy the bundle than the single I wanted - draw your own conclusions. I found it incomprehensible overall, but did think the interpersonal drama was effective.

NO SCI FI FILM IS BETTER THAN 2001-and if you say Star Wars your wrong -star wars is more fantasy and adventure and while 2001 is a fantasy its real and dramatic in the fact that there is no sound in the vaccum of space

Ain't she precious when she's all indignant?

Kubrick was a visionary and I dig all of his work, especially 2001 and Dr Strangelove.
CHT just hasn't learned to stop worrying
