Scoop Feedback:

October 30, 2003... Actress Traylor Howard has been cast as Jamie Kennedy's wife in SON OF THE MASK. Howard, who starred opposite Alred Molina in the short-lived TV series BRAM & ALICE last season, will play the mother of the infant that accidentally puts on the cursed mask of Loki, turning the baby into a force of supernature. Kennedy will play the new Dad trying to get his infant son back to normal. Larry Guterman (CATS & DOGS) will direct the film for New Line Cinema. [The Hollywood Reporter.]

December 17, 2003... Not content to sit back and rest on the laurels that THE RETURN OF THE KING is gathering from audiences starting today, New Line Cinema has snuck up and debuted the teaser portion of the SON OF THE MASK website online, as well as the film's teaser trailer. You can get an idea of what kind of mayhem to expect in this indirect sequel to the original 1994 film (has it really been ten years?). SON OF THE MASK stars Jamie Kennedy as aspiring cartoonist Tim Avery whose infant son accidentally dons the mask of Loki and everything goes nuts. Alan Cumming also stars in the film as Loki the troublebringer himself.

January 15, 2004... Actor Bob Hoskins (WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT?) will play Odin, the Norse allfather of gods in SON OF THE MASK. Alan Cummings (X-MEN 2) had already been revealed to be cast as Loki, the god of mischief and one of the sons of Odin. The sequel to the 1994 Jim Carrey blockbuster is presently filming, with Jamie Kennedy taking over leading man duties.

It also appears that there have been some rewrites to the film's screenplay. According to the Hollywood Reporter article that announces Hopkins involvement, scribes Rob McKittrick, Tom Gammill and Max Pross join Lance Khazei as credited screenwriters on the project. [THR.]

January 21, 2004... Another scooper told us what the filmmakers of SON OF THE MASK were working on recently. The production was shooting scenes in the dining rooms of Sydney, Australia's Eye Hospital last week. The MASK sequel is indeed lensing in Sydney and stars Jamie Kennedy, Alan Cumming, Bob Hoskins and Traylor Howard. [Anonymous.]

May 4, 2004... While the long-in-development sequel to Jim Carrey's 1994 box office smash THE MASK is finally being filmed, none of the stars or the director from the first production are involved with the sequel. However, when SON OF THE MASK arrives in theaters next year there will be at least one member of the crew that has a direct connection to the previous film: composer Randy Edelman.

Music From the Movies has learned that Edelman will score SON OF THE MASK for New Line Cinema. Edelman scored the first MASK movie a decade ago. He'll also be busy working on the score for STEALTH, due out in May 2005. That project for Columbia Pictures is a collaboration between Edelman and electronica music artist BT. November 10, 2004... The full trailer for New Line's SON OF THE MASK has gone live at the film's official website. Opening in theaters on February 18, 2005, the sequel picks up with a whole new cast of characters led by Jamie Kennedy (you know, Randy from the SCREAM trilogy, remember?) The trailer will set things up for you, but in a nutshell, the mask of Loki which made Jim Carrey turn into a living cartoon character this time does its magic to a small dog, a small baby and the helpless Dad (played by Kennedy.) You'll get to see some of what each of these three do when the Mask and its powers transform each of then into zany goofballs.
