Son of THE THING?

Fangoria is reporting that The Sci Fi Channel's four-hour mini-series based on THE THING -- to be executive produced by SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION writer/director Frank Darabont -- will not be a remake as everyone originally believed it to be. Instead, the website is reporting that the Channel's new THING will be a sequel to John Carpenter's 1982 film!
First announced in the spring of 2003, the original description for Sci Fi Channel's THING led everyone to believe that it was a remake. As we first reported back then, the Channel described Gary L. Goldman's script as follows: "It's everywhere. It's anything. And it can't be stopped. SCI FI re-envisions the terrifying suspense classic, THE THING, which follows a team of American scientists who discover a bloodthirsty alien life form in the frozen expanse of Antarctica. Swift, stealthy and cunning, this shape-shifting monster assumes the appearance of its victims with the aims of earning the scientists' trust -- and decimating the group from the inside. Who can be trusted, and who is a threat?" Sure sounds like a remake to us.
No additional detail concerning the project were forthcoming, leaving us to wonder if the mini might be also set in the frozen wastes of Antartica with perhaps a different group of explorers that unearth the not-so-friendly headlining extraterrestrial.
