The brave blue hero is back! And this time, it's more than just fun and games. That's right, Sonic the Hedgehog is starring in his own motion picture, filled with all the fast-paced energy and action-packed excitement that Sonic's famous for! Dig this: Sonic's arch nemesis Dr. Robotnik has been banished from the Land of Darkness by an evil Metal Robotnik. And if that wasn't bad enough, the envious doctor tells Sonic that the Robot Generator has been sabotaged and will blow Planet Freedom to kingdom come. But what could possibly make Sonic trust his worst enemy? What could make him risk life and paw? Surely not the words of Dr. Robotnik. Not even the pleas of the President. It's not until the President's beautiful daughter Sara turns on the charm that Sonic springs into action. But does Sara really have eyes for Sonic, or is she sweet on the new kid on the block, the never-before-seen Hyper Metal Sonic? If you've been waiting with anticipation for Sonic, you can stop holding your breath. But go ahead and turn blue with Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie! The Review!
The Anime of the game!Audio:
This comes in English Stereo only, although the sound is a high 224K, but it doesn't sound in anyway special for such a high bitrate.Video:
Video presentation is somewhat muted in it's colours, giving a slightly dull look to the films playback. Overall the presentation style makes the anime look older than it really is.Packaging:
On the front cover we have Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. And on the back we have five stills from the feature, as well as the usual informational listings. Inside we have a single sheet insert, which is just a copy of the front cover.
The disc itself is a nice shiny silver colour, with Sonic printed on the top.Menu:
The menu is a simple blue and yellow affair, with Sonic as the main decoration. Next to him we have the main menu options of Play, Scene selection, Special features and ADV previews.Extras:
We have character bios and a simple slide show.Content:
(please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Not much to add really, the basic premise above covers most of the plot and action. I can only add that as Sonic travels to Robotroplis to shutdown the generator, he meets up with his old pal Knuckles, who helps out along the way. Only it is all a trick to get Sonic to meet and fight the Metal Sonic.
The real meat and potato battle occurs when Sonic finally meets Hyper Metal Sonic. And when they do finally meet there is a long and protracted battle (just like watching DBZ). The outcome of the battle will determine whether the Land in the Sky survives or not. Although to be honest I was routing for Hyper Metal Sonic to win, just so it would all end.
On the plus side this film does have the look of an Anime, as well as a little bit of feel of the game, and the characters and plot devices remain true to their game personas.
I find this release a most strange choice- why? Well I really can't work out who this title is supposed to appeal to. It wouldn't appeal to me as I'm too old, and it wouldn't appeal to younger people as they will most likely have not played Sonic the Hedgehog. It carries a PG certificate so parents will not buy it for the very young to watch. Not to mention that the Sonic craze finished many years ago. I really can't see this flying off the shelves in a frenzy of panic buying.
It's not bad, it's not good, it's not anything.
In summary- It's OK, but I'm very unsure as to who will buy this Anime.
