According to Variety, Sony has started development to bring Konami's hit video game franchise, Metal Gear Solid, to the big screen.

Michael De Luca will produce and video game creator Hideo Kojima will executive produce the film.

The stealth based game centers on Solid Snake, a retired soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapon facility to neutralize a terrorist threat.

Not much else is known at this time.

KJ's Take:  Still relatively vague on where this one is going to go creatively.  Video game franchises haven't exactly found the profitability that comic book adaptations have, let alone the critical success.  Hopefully some upcoming adaptations can change that, this included.

I just finished reading how Sony has refrained from giving any sneak previews to the forthcoming Ghost Rider. This usually means the movie isn't very good and will tank. My confidence with Sony on this isn't very high.

(They're also notorious for coming out with crappy direct-to-video animated films by the same title as theatrical release Disney films such as Pocahontas, Little Mermaid, etc...).

Being that Hideo Kojima already makes the game and its plots is in a movie format, and he is directly involved in this film, the only thing that can ruin this is directing or acting. Put John Wu as the director, and Hugh Jackman as Solid and you got a pretty "solid" movie.

The majority of video game movies have marketed to a false view of the average gamer. Stats show that the average age of video game "consumers" (is that even the right term???) is 27.

I would assume that a well done nuclear espionage movie would be targeted at the 25-35 male audience anyways. So if Sony picks the right demographic, this could work.

gods - I'm with you all the way. Although it's Woo not Wu, unless there is another really great action film director out there using name recognition as a way to go main stream. Jackman kicks some major ass as Wolvie, and he has been pretty good in some of his other flicks, I would like to see a little more of that kind of slimey guys he plays in Swordfish, maybe?. John Woo can pretty much make anything watchable, especially if there are doves in it, can't get enough of those dove scenes, although I'm not sure how he would get doves in a nuclear weapon facility.

The toughest part will be hearing Snake speak without David Hayter's voice. Kurt Russell would have been perfect for the role 20 years ago. After All Solid Snake was based on Snake Plisken, but Jackman would be a good candidate now.

It would be cool to see the MGS movie go head to head with Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell which is also in production. That film faces the same tough casting issue though in that Michael Ironside IS Sam Fisher, his voice has become as important to the character as any gadget or stealth move, and it's going to be tough to accept anyone else's voice. Both of these franchises have been leaders not only in terms of gameplay, but also in that they have great writing supported by fantastic voice over work by Hayter and Ironside respectively. Their performances are no small part of the whole. How do you find an actor that fits not only the look, but also the voice?
