It's looking like Hollywood is all about Frankenstein these days, with Deadline New York reporting another version of Mary Shelley's creation will be making its way to the silver screen courtesy of Sony Pictures and producer Matt Tolmach.

With Craig Fernandez pitching the story and prepared to flesh out the script, there's no word how this version will set it apart from previous reboots of the character. The writer recently penned From Prada to Nada, described as a Latin spin on "Sense and Sensibility". He also just scripted Everything Must Go, a DreamWorks Animation project based on Terry Pratchett's The Bromeliad Trilogy.

It's the latest reboot planned for the iconic monster with Universal and director Guillermo del Toro planning their own remake if the helmer ever finds an opening in his busy schedule while the folks over at 1019 Entertainment are likewise planning to adapt Dean Koontz's Frankenstein into a potential film franchise as well.

Nothing like a ton of films from the same general material all hitting in a short period to make people sit up and take notice.

Or was it "to make people think Hollywood is out of ideas?"

Don't mind remakes of this book at all. However it does diminish the impact that so many are doing remakes of the same near the same time. You don't want 3 remakes of Hamlet coming out within a couple years of each other.

Hollywood is a copycat world and studios are always trying to steal others' thunder. It isn't the first time similar material goes into production or is announced from rival studios at the same time. It recently happened with Jason and the Argonauts for example

Was no lesson learned from the recent Wolfman?

This is all so lame.  Why?  The last Frakenstein with De Niro and Branagh was good enough.  Next up they are going to re-do Dracula too!

I am more excited for the re-make of "The Creature from the Black Lagoon".  At least no one has touched that since the 30's!  I loved the re-boot of the Wolfman.  Then they could do a re-boot of "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", but do it super rated R with some real heavy actor doing the part.  Do it on the level of "Silence of the Lambs" and it would be BAD ASS.  "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" has to be rated R as well, otherwise it will be stupid.  No more PG-13 horror movies!  They are all CRAP.

Actually The Creature From the Black Lagoon was made in the 50's. But you're right it's been untouched since then and the only one of the original Universal monster features not to get the remake treatment. And second the notion that it should be a R rated effort or why bother.

It's a shame that FX great Stan Winston isn't around any more he could have come up with an awesome version of the creature.

With all of this going on, what's the point of even questioning why they remake this stuff anymore?

Didn't Kenneth Branagh already make the best adaptation of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" ?  I remember some actor by the name of Di'Nero having a big part in it too. Hell, Mary Shelley's Frankenhole on Adult Swim even has the right version.  Dean Koontz's Frankenstein? Really? A tribal tattoo'd Adam(Frankenstein's Creation), I barely made it through 7 pages of questioning this books purpose (like Adam) before I put it back on the store shelf.

I agree that the Creature From The Black Lagoon would be awesome to update, given that the makers of the film probably understood that technology and effects weren't as helpful to their vision as they'd of hoped for. I haven't read "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide", but I think it would be a great tribute not only to classic literature but to the infamous character as well.

Oh and Scaretastic Caveman: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Frankenstein's nameless creation I'll refer to as Adam (from the creatures notion after reading Paradise Lost, that he is like Adam and damned from Eden)  was never really a typical B-movie monster like Jason Vorhees or Freddie Kruger, but an intelligent creature that effectively set out to ruin his creator for creating him, leaving him, and so forth. It's a tale that warns of the dangers of experimentation, mother-hood and father-hood etc.

Point is, other than the ridiculous 1930's James Whale version of "Frankenstein" and regressing of the character and story, "Frankenstein" is not a slasher flic.
