The Sopranos: The Blue Comet

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Wednesday, June 06, 2007

Well, better late than never, I really hate computers (more on that in my blog here at Mania).  Anyway, I’m finally getting to this review, and we are finally getting to some closure with this series. I almost decided to let this one go and just review the series finale, but I couldn’t because the events in this episode were just too monumental not to discuss even if it is a day late. We had to wait two weeks for this episode and now in the aftermath those two weeks just feel like part of the overall build up to the inevitable, the bloodbath that has to finalize this series. How long could a series like The Sopranos run? These are gangsters doing gangster stuff, eventually they go into witness protection or they die, there’s not a lot in between.

In this episode the bloodbath begins in force killing off one of my favorite characters on the series. The animosity between Phil and Tony has been growing, plus I believe Phil has something to prove as the new boss in New York. He feels that the Jersey crew has no respect for the true ways of the mafia and he believes that they are barely more than a bunch of thugs. So, as we have been expecting he orders a swift hit killing Tony, Sil, and Bobby in 24 hours not allowing time for retaliation. What Phil doesn’t know is that Tony has a friend in the FBI who repays some information Tony shared by warning him about the hit. So Tony brings some family in from Italy to help take out Phil first. Their attempt however fails because they kill another man who looks a lot like Phil. Before Tony can react Bobby is brutally taken out in a train shop and Sil is badly wounded in a shoot out in front of the Bing. Doctors say that he may never regain consciousness.

Now, I really wanted to see Tony’s crew kill off Phil and that’s probably why it didn’t happen. We as viewers are being told the story through the eyes of Dr. Melfi in a way. Like her we have found a way over the years to build sympathy for these characters, to even like them. As she realizes more and more throughout this episode that she in fact is dealing with a criminal and in her own way may be helping him to be better at his job we are being reminded that these are bad guys and they are getting what they deserve. At the same time the New York crew are also bad guys but Phil is older than Tony as is many of his crew. They’ve been in the business longer so it makes sense that they are smarter at making these kinds of major plays against other families. When it all starts to go down Phil disappears and I bet some of his closest associates do too. Tony and his confidants stay in the thick of it, leaving themselves open to be executed. I also believe that in the season finale Paulie will play a major part in the endgame, I believe he has fully turned and is double-crossing Tony. When the word is given about who to kill Paulie is provided a pass by Phil and Paulie also seems to be the most hesitant to draw first blood when the word comes down that New York is planning a hit. Paulie has turned to New York before and I think he has again; there are other little subtle nuances in the episode that point to this being the case.

I knew it was coming but knowing it was coming didn’t lessen the shock of seeing it on screen especially in regard to Silvio. I like his character a lot but the opening moments of the episode are there to remind us that yes he is a bad dude ready to kill if it benefits him. Like I mentioned earlier I think a lot of what happens in the episode is set up to justify the deaths that follow, well other than the dude on the motorcycle.   Carm and Meadow meet up with Janice and her sons who are completely devastated. Tony literally had to kick A.J.’s butt to get him in gear and it was way past time. Tony told him what happened and told him he had to leave with Carm and instead of taking the events seriously A.J. decides that he’s depressed over it all. That did it for Tony and he drug A.J. into his closet and told him to pack.

So, we already know that the end of the season will find Janice and Sil’s wife (can’t remember her name right now) widowed and Uncle June being moved into a state facility. So, what’s next? Is Tony about to get killed or will he get the opportunity to for revenge? I’d hat to see Phil live through this but it could very well happen. This episode made it all worth it. It was full of drama, suspense, and even a little humor. I can’t wait to see how it all ends.

I thought it an interesting comparison: When Bobby was hit, he was totally surprised and caught off guard. He didn't even try to rech for a gun or anything. Whereas Silvio was more collected and seemed to take his time to get his gun, almost ignoring the first bullet he takes in the shoulder.

Wonder what will happen with Patsy with his running away?

DarkJedi • Jun 06, 2007, 02:59am •
Probably nothing considering he was shooting also..Tony ran himself when he though he was betrayed at John's house last year.

You're right on the differences. Bobby was off in his own little world wanting to get something for his hobby..He didn't know it. He could have if he took his phone in.

The man who couldn't reach Bobby...aka Silvio? He knew what was going down and he wasn't going down without a calm fight. Which was his style.

So now, it's just really Paulie and Tony as the big men..and they're either living or dieing together it seems. They're going to stick together like glue now in the final episode.

Next week should be interesting.

The problem with the sopranos is failure to close a story....they are great at coming up with ideals, they just dont know how to finish them.

What made this show different from other gangster/mob shows was that Tony was in therapy. Every couple episodes we see him sitting on the coutch. Now, how does this end. Not with him getting better or realizing that he would never change, but by Dr. Melphie reading an article and finally realizing that she is treating a criminal. And then no big confrontation between them. Just a small arguement and it is done. For a show to have this as a main issue and to end it like this was disappointing. This should have been bigger than the fight between Phil.

I often think what could have been....what could have happened with the Russian who escaped. What could have been with Chris going into witness protection...what could have been with the FBI trying to actual arrest Tony. What happened with all the informants.
I think the last episode is going to be disappointing like most of the series and just leave us with more what could of beens!

So your upset because they didn't tell the stories you wanted them to? The Russian ran off. Why should they follow up anymore? How many things happen in real life that don't have "closure"? The conclusion with Melfi was probably the most likely outcome. Tony gets cured? Can he be cured? He's a criminal, he's not going to suddenly stop. And it's doubtful he'd ever realize himself that he can't change, he's not that self aware.

I always thought it would have been interesting if Melfi had told Tony, at some point, that he has a choice... he can continue being a criminal, OR he can take a shot at becoming a happier, more satisfied human being, but that he can't really be both. I don't think Tony would have chosen the latter, but it might have been fun to see him wrestle with that. I don't know that the real position among medical professionals IS - CAN you be a "mentally healthy" criminal? Killer? Mob Boss? - but that central dilemma was kind of ducked.

But I still loved it. And the magazine page being the "straw that broke the camel's back" was fun. *S*

I have no idea how this will end up - it could go any of MANY ways, lets face it! Frankly, I would like to see the series end with Tony alive. Not that he ISN"T a monster... but he has been a very entertaining, interesting monster, and I have more affection for him than the monsters who are likely to do him in (Phil and company). We shall see!

I've been watching The Sopranos since it first aired, I've always enjoyed the show - but for some reason this final season has been a little slow and uninteresting.

I realize that this season came about because DC & HBO decided to ax the movie idea so DC had to write a whole different set of stories to wrap this up.

That said - I really hope that Phil and his gang aren't the only ones that come out clean. Phil was always a 3rd, 4th rate support role, shoulda stayed that way. Also why grease Bobby and Sil - yet Paulie is still around? That's something I don't get.

As for following up on stories left unfinished. I always hoped that the Russian would show up again and make life hairy for Paulie and Christopher. "Pine Barrens" is one of the best eps. of this series. Other than that I’m pretty happy with what DC has done.

*sigh* No matter, now I can drop HBO from my cable programming and save the money to buy The Sopranos DVDs.

I personally don't think Paulie is going to be a trader. There might be suggestions that this is the case, but I think the real hint of what is going to happen was given years ago. Paulie once told Tony that he thought they would "die together." Seems to be what it is leading up too. I don't think Phil will live through it either. Tony is packing a big gun. I just see them all going down.

How about a review that doesn't tell the whole story over again? I guess the reviewers at this site are too dumb to realize I want a review, not a narrative.

How about if you don't like it don't read it?

I have to say that one of the best TV death scenes I have seen was Bobby's. Showing the expressions on the faces of the little model train people while you heard the screams of the bystanders and the model train crashing as it derails was just brilliant editing and cinematography. A mobsters life comes to a crashing end.

I believe that DC has said before that nothing in the show is included by accident. With that being said, I wonder what the alleged terrorist subplot has in store if anything. Tony saw the website that A.J. was looking at after he dragged him into the closet. AJ has been really following up on Al Jazeera and issues regarding the Middle East and again I wonder if there is a connection and whether it will be able to be addressed in the hour that we have left.
