It's all out war between the girls and the boys with quite a lot at stake.

What They Say
It's Tomoki. Time flies, and it's already snowing for the first time this year. Japan's winters are nice. You get under a nice blanket around a table, eat some tangerines, and spend the time relaxing in peace and quiet. But, I know that will never happened. Can't I have dreams, too? And when winter comes, you want to go to a hot spring. Surrounded by snow, go to an open-air bath, along with the cuties. That would be awesome. It doesn't really matter, but can someone please do something about Astrea? She's annoying and always follows me around.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
After the really awful wrestling episode last week, I was partially dreading this week in that it could be something equally problematic to watch. While the first two episodes were fun, the third episode nearly derailed the series for me. Amusingly though, this one works with the Warring States period as its backdrop and it's something I just saw in another form with Sengoku Basara, so a lot of it was very fresh in my mind. Suffice to say that these parodies are years old to begin with, but it's fun to see some of the characters taking on similar roles, right down to Date's eyepatch, and having fun with the old style setting of war.

And it is most definitely war! With winter in full effect here, In order to pass the time a bit, a snowball fight has been set on the school grounds with a large scale area so they can really go at it. With traditional settings for the commanding section, some of the uniforms and more, Tomoki is set as the general for the boys as they go against the girls. The stakes are actually high as the winning team can do whatever they want to the losing team for a day. That's a whole lot of incentive for young men in their prime (who wouldn't know what to do half the time anyway!) and they give Tomoki the encouragement he needs to really go at it. The girls are amusing in that they're decent at first, especially with catapults, but it's Astrea that gets involved and does most of the damage. To herself.

As much fun as the battle is, the interrogation phase takes it to the next level as it reveals the guys to all be very perverted sadists, though you expect that from Tomoki. Sadly, it's a short piece as they're more intent on showing us a hot spring in snow scene. Such a tragedy to go from one to the other. Mikako is really working an odd angle here as she first tenders a resignation at the start of the episode and then leads the girls in the snowball fight. Having her escape to a hot spring in the snow only adds to the unusual nature of what she's up to here, but as a viewer I can't help but think that everything she's doing is perfect. It's an episode like this that provides the kind of fun fanservice I like as a break from everything else.

In Summary:
While we do have some moments of seriousness here that pushes on the story about Astrea and events from Synapse itself, the episode is largely about the fun and fanservice. While I certainly wouldn't want every series to be like this or even more than a couple, I do love it when they come along and are done well like this. There's something very simple and fun about it all as it revels in its pervertedness and just enjoys it to the fullest. This episode definitely helps to remove the taste of the previous one with the pro-wrestling and left me with a smile and the desire to get my hands on Tomoki's interrogation handbook.
