Director Bryan Singer has met with actor Kevin Spacey and it has been agreed that he will appear in the upcoming sequel, SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL. According to Variety, Singer met with Spacey in New York while the actor was finishing up his broadway show of "Moon for the Misbegotten". The SUPERMAN RETURNS screenwriter, Michael Doughtery,  is now writing the script for the sequel.

Spacey says he hopes to shoot his Luthor scenes in a open six week window (the same situation happened for SR) after he finishes his Mamet film SPEED IN THE PLOW.

SUPERMAN:MAN OF STEEL is expected to hit theaters Summer 2009.

honestly ... SR sucked because it focused to much on tributing the early supes films, and not enough time on why we, in a new and completely different generation, should care in the first place. we have seen the movie before, at least 3 times now. SR didnt bring anything new to the table except his son (and that didnt help any) so hopefully they will do it right this time around

i am NOT seeing this if ORLANDO freaking BLOOM is playing ZOD, that would be a waste of time and money

Honestly...Superman Returns ROCKED because it blended in perfectly with a movie series that was over a decade and a half gone from the theaters.

It connected two different generations of movie goers.

But still...by all means...

Everyone continue to bitch about how SR just sucks....

I'd rather Batman and Superman continue to hit the movie theaters...not stall out for another 2 decades without a new movie.

I haven't met one person who said SR sucks in real life...and yet everytime I have to publish a Superman article, I have to hear the same 30 negative posts.

I guess I'm getting used to it now.

Or I just don't care. That could be it. Everyone has a different opinion on everything.

Some people say a movie sucks. Some people LOVE the movie (Count me in that one for SR)...It happens.

Although Spacey was the only worthwhile performance in all of Superman Returns, without some serious serious thought given to the script/story this movie could tank regardless of the effects and Singer's direction. The new title seems like a step in the right direction, lets hope Singer and his cronies can improve on their initial lackluster script. And lets all hope that Orlando "freaking" Bloom doesn't end up playing Zod.

Jarrod,
I left the theater bitching. If you'd like to meet me face to face I could tell you how much I hated "Returns". If Singer does a movie about how Lex tries to get Australia from Zod I will plotz!

BTW, one of the other things I hated about SR was that all the non major roles (i.e. TV anchors, one line extras) they all had Australian accents. That bugged me to no end. As much as Singer wants to deny it, Superman is an "American" icon... no matter how dark he tries to make that costume.

Hey, I hate SR and I've met and know a lot of people who hated the film and a select few who loved it. The reason the few loved it is because they are hard core Superman fans and honestly would've loved whatever they could've come up with. They even love Superman 3, go figure.

I'm not going to bash SR, I've stated my opinions on the film before but I will comment on the article. Spacey returning as Luthor isn't a surprise since I belive he's under contract. However, I sincerely hope that Luthor is brought in as a secondary character in this Man of Steel film because even you by now have to agree that Luthor as the main villain in 4 out of 5 Superman films is enough. It wouldn't be so bad if he was the powerful mastermind criminal owner of Luthorcorp and future president of the USA, but he's been portrayed as smart common criminal in all the films.
P.S. If they are even thinking of bringing Zod into this film to further rip off the originals then fire Singer and let Donner remake his own movie :)

hanso... I liked Superman 3 (nobody likes 4). I'd even settle for pre-crisis Lex the scientist.

Luthor again...what a shocker...
I'll save it for rental this time

hanso • Jul 11, 2007, 01:16am •
Really? To me 3 and 4 both sucked. I'd take any type of Lex that isnt the one we've always been seeing.

mlaforcer • Jul 11, 2007, 01:19am •
Ya, bring Donner back if they plan on Zod being the main bad guy again...To be honest I will wait till rental also and save myself the time and money it will take to view what seems to be some more rehash and stink coming from the Singer Camp...
But that's just me...All of you that love it all the power to ya...
Even having said that, this is really distressing to me because I loved the first Superman movie and would get up every saturday morning and watch the old 50's live action Superman and too hear the rumors that Zod is coming back and now Spacey is back, I feel we are going to get another Superman 2 movie...Move forward already and give us something we have not seen, it's that simple and I believe it to be that obvious...

The plot for this film will be Luthor involving Zod in a real estate scheme. Zod you destroy this city so the property value will go down and then I will buy the property at a low price. Then you rebuild it so I can resale at a higher price and have huge profits! In return I'll help you kill Superman!

All Lex Luthor does in the Superman films is be involved in real estate schemes. What a shame.
