The Spaghetti Epic 2: A Merging of Prog Rock and Spaghetti Western Film Music – Redux
By: Randall LarsonDate: Thursday, April 12, 2007
A unique adaptation of Italian Western film music performed by progressive rock bands, The Spaghetti Epic - Six Modern Prog Bands For Six Seventies Prog Suites was released by French record label Musea in collaboration with Colossus, a Finnish prog rock fanzine, in 2004. The 2-cd set was an inventive concept album built around Sergio Leone’s 1969 classic, Once Upon A Time in the West. Six bands –Haikara (Finland), Nicola Randone (Italy), Tilion (Italy), La Voce Del Vento (British band created on this occasion by the duo of Guy Manning & Andy Tillis of Parallel Or 90 Degrees and The Tangent), Taproban (Italy) and Trion (Netherlands) – created progressive suites of 20-25 minutes each, but rather than adapting themes from the Ennio Morricone score they crafted their own original compositions following his concept - creating one musical theme for each of the main characters.
The album was modestly successful enough to generate a second concept album: The Spaghetti Epic 2 – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, which was released by Musea on March 27th and may be well worth seeking out – it’s offered at amazon (although with a delay) and via the Musea web site. The concept was facilitated by Marco Bernard featuring a trio of bands, each one embodying one of the title characters: Nicola Randone (Italy – The Good), La Voce Del Vento (UK – The Bad) and Tilion (Italy – The Ugly).
