We’ve just about had our fill of naughty premium cable fun, so it’s time to kick it up a notch. “Beneath the Mask” centers the mayhem around a forbidden orgy designed to slingshot us into the final two episodes. Batiatus (John Hannah) has to slip his naysaying father (Jeffrey Thomas) out of the house so that Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) can throw the party to end all parties. A little wine, a little bloodletting, a few slaves dressed up as farm animals, and all hell eventually breaks loose… literally. Director Brendon Maher leaves little to the imagination, save for a climactic surprise that will send loyal viewers into fits of thrilling disbelief. The first three episodes of the season basically reveled in the shameless crimson soap opera for the hell of it, but now, for the first time, we have a clear direction to proceed. “Beneath the Mask” moves beyond titillation to so-bad-it’s-brilliant button-pushing, heightened by the fact that the one man standing in the way of everything is also the one man with actual morals. The irony is not lost on Gods of the Arena: signaling with this episode that it’s gearing up for the full monty.
