While Emile Hirsch was talking to Empire Online, he passed along that the new SPEED RACER will be shot entirely in green screen technology. The adaptation, shot by the Wachowski bros., will star Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, Matthew Fox, Susan Sarandon, John Goodman, Kick Gurry, Paulie Litt, Roger Allam, Ji Hoon Jung, Melvil Poupaud, Richard Roundtree and Christian Oliver.

"Nope, it's all green screen," Hirsch told us. "There were no sets, just us and the green background. I haven't seen anything of it finished yet, there was a lot of trust [in the Wachowskis] involved. It's going to be crazy. Was the monkey real? Yes."

SPEED RACER hits theaters May 9, 2008.

Hey, if they could pull it off with 300, why not.

I was thinking Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. 300 was not 100% greenscreen either. I'm not even sure I like this idea, but who cares, it will be good or bad for reasons beyond this.

I agree. This could easily go either way. I think it worked well for Sky Captain, 300 and Sin City. I am not sure about Speed Racer. The Matrix Reloaded has one of the best action scenes ever put on film, in my opnion, which is the freeway chase. I think that worked really well because they did it in real time and in CGI, and it worked beautifuly. With 100% CGI, it could be very easy to go way over the top. Well, I will hop on board and put my faith in the Wachowskis for now. I guess the true test will be when we get to see some final footage. That will make or break it.

"was the monkey real?" "yes"
if by " it could go either way" you're trying to say "if its crappy then it stuck close to the source material" or "if it turns out to be good, then the fans will say it deviated from the source material"
great...bring it on.

By "either way", I meant that the green screen could help it or hurt it. I really don't care about the source material. I never much cared for the show, so I hope they do change it some. To me, the only good thing Speed Racer spawned was the Alpha-Team techno song in the early 90's and the Sponge cover of the theme song on the Saturday Morning Cartoon Soundtrack. if it is updated, it could be very good. Although, I have to say, I always thought the Mach 5 was totally bad ass.

the Mach 5 was... the monkey sidekick was flat out stupid.
the cars on the show came off a little 1 dementional since they didnt move at all, they were like cardboard cars.
another show i hated (surprizingly) was Astroboy, i caught some of these originals in black and white and they were horrible.

I feel the same way about the Transformers cartoon and I thought the movie was pretty good. I did like the animated Transformers: The Movie but hated the show.

I believe that I have figured out exactly what the Wachowski Brother and Transexual "cross-dressing" Sister are doing and when you see it...the first trailer of the movie that is, I think you will all be amazed by the look of the film, and that it will be the most talked about movie in years. It will be nothing like you have ever seen before, well...on such a scale...which up until this point has only been done and seen in a few 15 to 30 second tv commercials, and only in a limited manner. This is not standard green screening...there is a reason why they are going to these extreme lengths and when you witness the visuals you will finally understand why. It has to do with the way they intend to process the shots of the characters, foregrounds, middle grounds and backgrounds.

Now...since this subject matter treads on something similar that is close to my heart...I will not expound on my comments, well, just in case the Wachowskis aren't as visionary as I may think, after all, I wouldn't want somebody to run with something that is rather revolutionary that I'd like to bring to the screen first. Sorry for being so cryptic, but this industry as you know...more often than not, sucks.

TAKE ON MEEEEEE!! TAKE ME ONNNNN!!! I'LL BE GONEEEEE!! This thing will prob look like the video for the song.

I hated this cartoon as a kid. However I am lookin forward to this mostly because the way the Wachowskis revolutionized special effects with The Matrix. Now can they strike gold a second time? We'll soon find out. The one thing that upsets me a little is the fact that they're releasing this a week after Ironman, Just wish the studios would space out these big budget movies a little more to give them a better chance of succeding.

Am I wrong or isn't this for kids???
