Two sites, Sci Fi Wire and AICN, both have some information today on the upcoming Wachowski brothers film, Speed Racer.

First AICN, who had a scooper write in to tell him that the film is going to be "largely/entirely green screen," similar to Sin City or 300.

Then Sci Fi Wire caught up with Joel Silver, producer on Speed Racer.  Here are some quotes from Silver:

"V for Vendetta and Matrix are both R-rated movies," Silver said. "This is a family picture. But it's going to look like something you've never seen before in your life."

"I mean, they really want to make a movie for everybody, and they felt that now is the time that they could really do that," Silver said. "They can concentrate on making a film, you know? They have nieces and nephews that couldn't have seen [any] of their movies, and so they wanted to make one they could see. And they've always loved Speed Racer, and there's a chance to do something really incredible."

The film is eyeing a May 2008 release.

KJ's Take:  I have no problem with a family friendly film, so long as the plot is there.  I can't wait to see where they are gonna take this.

If they put it in IMAX 3D, I'll go.

I don't mind when filmakers make movies out of old cartoons that their kids can watch, as long as they movies aren't dumbed down so much that they just aren't enjoyable. Rocky & Bullwinkle comes to mind. I think the Wachowski brothers will deliver a unique and entertaining film that really pushes the effects envelope.

wess - I agree the Wachowski brothers are brilliant, The Matrix Trilogy has got to be near the top of my list as far as movie franshises go. However the final epic battle scene between Neo and Agent Smith, kind of fell apart from an effects stand point. There were portions that looked completely fake. I just wonder how much of that was them, and how much was the production company pressuring them to get it done. I'm hoping now they have enough clout to follow through completely from an effects stand point.

Joel Silver needs to come up with a new catch phrase. I think he's described every movie he's ever produced as something you've "never seen before." Anyway, Speed was never a favorite of mine, but I'm still curious.

I have no problem with them making the movie with kids in mind, as long as it's still interesting for adults. There's no reason to turn Speed Racer into an R-rated movie. It's based on a cartoon, and all the fun and adventure of the original cartoon can be packed into a PG-13, family friendly movie. I'm looking forward to seeing the Sin City style applied to more family-friendly movies.

Get the Mach 5 right and you're halfway there.

I just fear Spritle and Chim-chim will be the next generation Jar-Jar in this movie. "The Incredibles" was a great family movie because it was intelligent AND had enough homages to genres that adults can get into. And hardly a fart joke in it. I grew up with Speed Racer and need to know it won't get be treated as a 2 hour toy marketing commercial.

Speed Racer as a major live-action movie is just about as stupid as it gets. I mean, the next thing you know someone will want to make some other stupid cartoon like Underdog into a live action flick.

Joel Silver, professional shyster. Yeah, yeah...sure, sure...it'll look like NO OTHER movie before it. Well, if anyone can do it it's the Wachowiski brothers.
