Branagh Helms New Jack Ryan

Paramount hires Kenneth Branagh to direct next Jack Ryan movie.

Kenneth Branagh seems to be the man that Paramount Pictures wants leading their next Jack Ryan adventure to the silver screen. Variety reports that a week after Jack Bender departed the upcoming prequel of Tom Clancy's character, Branagh has been brought on board to direct. The Thor helmer already has his lead star locked in by way of Chris Pine and will be taking from a screenplay by David Koepp.

It's still too early for any official plot concepts but producer Mace Neufield told CS last year that "We pick him up when he's on Wall Street," he said. "...[but] the Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They're kind of 'thinking man's thrillers.' Jack is referred to as a 'water-walker' because of his ability to jump ahead to conclusions. That's very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that's how we want to portray him. He's a teacher. He's a historian. He's a linguist. And he's really smart."

Sound off with your thoughts below.

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

My thoughts are that I like how that sounds. I only read like the first 6 books so I really don't know where Clancy led the character but I'm game to see what Branagh and Pine bring.

I liked Ford but always felt he was way too old and wish that Alec Baldwin had stuck with the character.

Looking forward to seeing this franchise back on track

I wish Branagh was directing Thor 2.

Me likey and while your at it Ken, please bring Rainbow 6 to the big screen.  It's more John Clarkcentric, but would make for a heck of flicker show.

First step, don't hire Ben afleck...anything else, can't wait.

I hope Ken takes a role in the film as well. He is a fantastic screen actor.

Sounds good, I liked the Jack Ryan books (though Clancy tended to get a little too preachy and politically introspective as the series progressed) and I loved the movies, even Sum of All Fears.  I look forward to hearing where they take this one.

wise, if you read the first 6 books then you've basically read the only ones worth reading.  After he made Ryan President, he shifted more towards Rainbow 6 and Clark then pretty much took him out of the stories replaced by his son Jack Jr and those novels haven't been that good.  Didn't even bother picking up the last one.

Clancy was probably the greatest cold war writer out there but didn't know how to make the transition to Terrorism.  Kind of curious which way they are going to go with the movies...the best novels have already been made into films with the exception of Rainbow six.  Not a great book but it would make a great action movie.

I am very excited for this. Kenneth Branagh, turned out one hell of a good flick with Thor. Chris Pine has turned out to be a great, new actor and one of my current favs.

Wow! the world is so screwed up, that we are getting excited about a prequel to a damn prequel! Pretty soon, for example we'll have movies like: Boy Bruce Wayne, Infant Spiderman, and my fav- The Lil' Avengers.

I still want Without Remorse as a movie.  John Clark is the textbook definition of badass.
