FUNimation has scored their first win with us for the Best DVD Release of 2009 with Spice and Wolf taking the honors. FUNimation only had one title up for 2009 while the rest were filled with Sentai Filmworks, Nozomi Entertainment and Bandai Entertainment titles. In our running of this since 2004, FUNimation has not picked up a title of the year award from our readers until now. Their monthly wins are a bit varied as well, though the company traditionally has the better selling titles on the market. While Spice and Wolf took at December 2009 nod, their last monthly win was in February 2008 with Mushishi Vol. 6. And before that it was their release of Fullmetal Panic: The Second Raid back in March of 2007. In comparison, the other studios and Geneon typically picked up a lot more monthly wins. Congratulations to FUNimation for their first win with a most worthy title.

It was a tough call, but between Black Lagoon season 2 and Spice and Wolf, I went with the latter, only because the former came out as individuals in 2008.
