It looks like history is about to repeat itself: Columbia Pictures reports that the opening day for SPIDER-MAN 2 set a new record for the highest-grossing opening ever for a movie. According to preliminary results issued by the studio, SPIDER-MAN 2 took in a whopping $40.5 million dollars on its opening day yesterday. The film was showing in an equally large amount of theaters, specifically 4,152 to be exact, and many of the movie houses were showing the film on multiple screens.
"We are off to a phenomenal start on what looks to be a magical six days for SPIDER-MAN 2," said Jeff Blake, Vice Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution in a company press release. "SPIDER-MAN 2 may be the best reviewed film of the year, and now it's clearly being loved by audiences as well. Sam Raimi and the producers and cast have delivered a great film."
The opening for the sequel beats the ticket receipts record held by the first SPIDER-MAN film ($39.4 M) back in 2002. As well, the second film has set a new record for the largest Wednesday opening of all time.
Now the next record to fall will be whether the picture can best the weekend performance of its predecessor: the first SPIDER-MAN took in $114.8 M in its first three days of release.
