SPIDER-MAN 3 Actual Numbers

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Tuesday, May 08, 2007

Hello fellow Maniacs. Normally, I’m restricted to the weekend content but since it’s the summer, I’ll be trying to update everyone on current activities and updates of the industry. My weekly box office report is sometimes not accurate a few days after because every website is in a considerable hurry to publish the findings of the weekend.

Think of it as the OFN effect as Devin from Chud.com puts so eloquently in a recent ethics rant. You see, we focus on providing good content above all else and sometimes we end up being slower then some blood sucking news sites (whom provide no sources, original content, etc). Devin at Chud.com and Robert at IESB.com put it eloquently when Devin said some sites are such a rush to publish news (*cough* AICN *cough*) that they care nothing about sources, backing up the content, etc.

Here at Mania, we do care.

As such, I’m putting up the actual numbers for the recent Spider-Man 3 release to correspond with my box office report. Here’s the actual numbers.

Spider-Man 3 stats:

Screens: Over 10,000 screens.
Locations: At 4,252 theaters
Domestic Total: 151 million
Foreign Total: 230.5 million
Countries released: 107 countries
Worldwide Total in a Week: 381.7 million

Spider-Man 3 Records to Note:

Record- All Time Friday Opener: 109 million
Record-All Time Saturday Opener: 51.3 million
Record-All Time Sunday Opener: 39.9 million
Record-Fastest to 100.0 million
Record- IMAX debut: 4.8 million
Record- All Time Opening Weekend: 151 million
Record-Biggest Gap between #1 (Spider-Man 3) and #2 (Disturbia)
Record-Biggest Budget w/ Marketing (between 350-500 million)

Those are the “known” records for just this weekend. More might be coming when you account that nothing much is coming out this weekend that could top Spider-Man 3 in domestic or foreign sales. There are movies coming out (such as 28 Weeks Later) but nothing which can go against such a massively released tent pole movie like Spider-Man 3.

As I said, more “Special” Box Office Reports will be coming out in the future to account for weekly Summer News. I’ll try and keep everyone up to date with everything.

In the meantime, be sure to fill out my question from the last two week Box Office Reports here at Mania.com.

I actually saw this coming, I knew Spiderman 3 would be an awesome hit. Of course, the numbers still blow me away. I don't think Pirates stands a chance.

I just don't see the same hype surrounding Pirates that surrounded Spiderman.

I personally do not really care about it smashing new records. I do think that is juxtaposes the falling theatre attendance nicely though.

While, I don't really care all that much about the b.o. numbers when compared to the quality of the particular flick, I have to say those are some serious numbers. I figured that Spidey 3 would do very well, but not this well, so quickly. It will be very interesting to see how it fares in the coming weeks , especially when POTC3 enters the fray.
I saw Spidey here in London on Saturday to a packed house and it was in my opinion, a really good movie. If I wasn't a comic book lover, I still would have loved it. It hit on all points as far as a movie goes. Being a "comic fanboy" as I am, it was awesome seeing Venom on screen and he looked perfect. The only negatives I could see with the movie, which I really can't honestly call "negatives" was the psychoanalysis of pretty much every main character and the myriad of stories going on all at once. I would have liked to see a better more concrete Sandman plotline ending. I have to give to Raimi though, because a lesser director could not have made this movie as good as it was with everything going on.
Also nuff props to Raimi and Maguire for the "evil Parker" strutting around NYC scene. That was freaking hilarious!! I give Spidey a definite A.

Saw it on Friday and really enjoyed it...however there was a 'something' missing that was evident in the first two. Perhaps I didnt feel if Parker/Spidey was never in real danger - even as he was being hammered by sandman. The scene in Spiderman 2 when he stops the train and how he was protected by the train passengers from Doc Oc was the heart (and danger?)that was missing from this third edition. Time to leave at this station Sam and friends.
PS the reviews in here in Austrlia have been mixed to say the least.

AICN rushing news and not having reliable sources? Sounds like grade schoolers complaining about whos right and whos wrong...I find a lot of the time this is the last site I go to for news because updates happen less frequently.

Dont pat yourself on the back too hard you might bruise.

Sorry for the non Spiderman related post but I had to comment on the attitude.

Does anyone see Spiderman passing 500 mil in record time?

I still see Pirates coming out on top because I think it has a broader appeal. Now that SM3 has had its big media push, expect to see lots of Pirates media hitting the streets. I think Disney was holding back until SM3 had its premiere because the company knew it couldn't match Spidey's hype. But, I expect we'll get a flood of commercials, TV and print coverage of Captain Jack and his cohorts.

Jarrod, I think you've got an error in your numbers. Friday's numbers were just shy of $60M, not $109M. Notice that the numbers otherwise don't add up to the $151M for the entire weekend - if Friday's take had been $109M, the total for the weekend would have been nearly $200M.

Thanks for the additional updates, Jarrod! I was wondering where to find the final, solid numbers...
I thought SM3 will trump PotC3, and this opening (and the WoM I'm hearing) convince me.
