Harry Potter fought Jason Bourne over the past week in the DVD charts and the clear winner is nobody. Or both, depending on how you want to look at it here. Harry and his band of wizards won the DVD sales charts while Bourne ruled the DVD rental charts. In the end, both films did very well for Warner Bros. and Universal. We can't be sure how much money they made in the sales category because studios keep those numbers closely guarded though Universal did announce via a press release that Bourne sold $95 million worth of DVDs in its first six days on the market.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was the top DVD seller for the week ending December 16, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert data, outselling The Bourne Ultimatum and fellow new release High School Musical 2.

But the third Jason Bourne action-thriller won in the rental arena, capturing the top spot on Home Media Magazine's rental chart with estimated revenue of $15.4 million, compared with $12.3 million for second-ranked "Potter."

Combined, the two films grossed more than half a billion dollars in North American theaters. "Bourne" earned $227 million, while "Potter" collected $292 million.

The previous week's top seller, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, slipped to No. 4, not far behind behind High School Musical 2.

On the HD DVD chart, "Bourne" outsold "Potter" by a margin of nearly 2-to-1. On the
Blu-ray Disc chart, "Pirates" led for a second week, with "Potter" debuting at No. 2.

That's all well and good, but the important numbers aren't included here... Specifically, the head to head Harry Potter bluray vs hddvd sales... I'm very curious to see how they compared.

Odd they don't regularly show DVD sales like B.O. I wonder what they have to hide? They must be making killer bank on DVD these days.

They are, Dazzler, which is why so many crappy movies end up with crappier sequels: DVDs.

I'll bet the studios are thinking it would be just fuel to the fire for the WGA if they announced how much they're getting off of DVD sales. It would increase the already strong support the WGA has from the movie/television viewing public.

I wonder how they count DVD rentals on subscription services like Netflix...

Once again, I wish Bourne was on Blu-ray.

it will be almostunbiased, once HD DVD is dead and buried....

If Blu-Ray wins the battle it'll be a first for Sony and it's many attempts to create a new model of content delivery.

Let's check the history -
Beta-Max, mini-disc, UMD . . . ALL roaring successes. Yes, let's go with Sony, who's last actual "win" in this column was back in 1982 with the compact disc - and that had no competing format.

All true, Merin, but don't be such a downer.

I bet PS3 sales would be better if Sony hadn't included Blu-Ray with it.
