SPOCK'S Mother Will Be Human

Passing this along just to keep the record straight on the upcoming STAR TREK film. During the week, Michael Fleming over at Variety Online released a press release that Winona Ryder will be playing the "Vulcan mother" of Spock (Zachary Quinto) in the next adventure. We all assumed this was an error on the report's part because it's contrary to Trek mythology on the Spock character.

It was an error, readers. Variety actually corrected their mistake the very next morning in their print version of the Daily Variety. I'm not sure why they took so long to edit their online report but they have corrected it now. The Vulcan aspect has been taken out. Still, our good friends over at Wizard Universe wanted this bit of information to be absolutely clear. They went straight to the producers and got the definitive word out of producer Damon's Lindelof's mouth...

Here's what he told Wizard Universe;

While we chalked it up to an error in reporting, we couldn’t be sure. So we dialed up Damon Lindelof, one of the film’s producers (and the co-creator of “Lost”) to tell us it ain’t so!

Sure enough, he responded: “Spock’s mother, Amanda, is ABSOLUTELY [EDITOR’S NOTE: emphasis is his] human. Shame on Variety!” When we asked if he wanted to go on the record with this, he said, “I insist!”

STAR TREK hits theaters Christmas Day 2008.

Big thanks to Scooper Jedi Banner for passing this along.

You don't say?

I have faith Lindelof and company will make a good movie. If you listen to their lost podcast they do listen to the fans.

Casting the excellent Bruce Greenwood in a role was surprising, but great. Casting Winona Rider is a huge mistake. She can't act. This is a publicity stunt like so many of Abrams' casting choices. Poor choice.

Yawn!

OK I'm one of the BIGGEST Trek Fans in the world and I have to say this whole movie is just going to suck @!#&.

The prequel idea is bad. The casting overall is unimpressive. assuming the "Romulans attempt to kill Kirk Ala Terminator style" is accurate, it's going to ruin the franchise. It's a stupid attempt to try and recast the original crew and then try to retell the cannon of the trek universe and sidestep continuity problems.

BAD, BAD, BAD, IDEAS ALL THE WAY AROUND!

Here, here trollman! "No way, man. She's still human! We wouldn't dare mess with that one particular solitary bit of continuity. Everything else is fair game though!"

Thanks for the Winona picture though Jarrod!

I'm starting to wonder if it's possible to go back in time and kill JJ's career before it starts.

I hear you daforce, I do. But I so loves me the Lost. Damn it!

This franchise has been crap for a long time, so I don't think Winona or Abrams are going to make it worse. If anything I think JJ is going to finally revive it. As for Winona, I have to admit I've always had a thing for her. So yes, why not her? Just makes me wish I was Spock's father.

BIG DEAL! She isnt going to be a huge part of the movie anyway... she's eye candy for all the Trek BoneHeads that just lust after "Spocks mother"... gross.
