Just a week after breaking the news that the MPAA rating was in doubt for Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables, Rene Rosa over at UGO has published some interesting inside discussions with director Stallone and his co-star Dolph Lundgren, who's once again appearing in a Sly movie twenty-three years after duking it out in Rocky IV.

Direct from the set of his upcoming action film, Rene asked straight up questions and received honest answers from Stallone on his mindset behind jumping into this 80's action star free-for-all so soon after bringing back Rambo to the big screen. The correlations are there between the two films and yet there's subtle differences according to Stallone.

Q: Did some of it come from the story of Rambo 4, team of mercenaries there, a lighter version of that in the way?

Sly:  Yeah, I did think about that, but that was all about Christianity.  But the idea of working with a group - the thing is, it started out as a dark comedy.  It started out as a satire.  I said, "You know what, let me make it really hard R" then I go back. So it constantly was being brutally changed.  It wasn't until literally a week before filming that I said, "let's make this kind of movie."

His co-star Dolph Lundgren--another action star of yesteryear--remains humble and excited about returning to the action fold in a Stallone flick.

Q: How's it feel to be back with Stallone?

D.L: It's terrific; it's a lot of fun; it's a challenge. He wrote a really good role for me. Though, it's a challenging role for me because he's a tough guy who has a big heart.

Q: When he asked you to be in this film, how did he explain the role to you?

D.L: Well he said it was a film about a group of mercenaries who go to South America on a mission. He asked me to read the script for one of the characters, which I think he wrote for me, or someone who is like me, because the guy's name is Gunner Jensen (laughs). There are only about 50 million people up there in Scandinavia. I really liked the role and he's made some revisions that made the character more interesting.

The action adventure will star Sylvester Stallone, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Charisma Carpenter, Giselle Itie, Brittany Murphy, David Zayas, Amin Joseph. Sly penned the script and directs for Millennium Films and Lionsgate.

Plot Concept: The Story follows a team of mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a South American dictator.

The Expendables will hit theaters April 23, 2010.

I can't wait for the movie.  Might have to do a Cartman to go into the future.

It's a challenging role for you, because you suck as an actor, Dolph.  Dang that was mean.

If this movie's even a little bit good it make a ton of money. I'm going just for that cast alone.

I hope they meet a Predator or 2 while they're down there.

Before I was saying that Avatar will be monumental. But could it be that the gathering of all these action stars in The Expendables will be the film that change life as we know it on Earth?

Or better yet, Expendables 2 will be shot in 3D IMAX and blow up theaters around the country!

CaptAmerica04 6/26/2009 8:39:57 AM

I hope Charisma Carpenter and Brittany Murphy go topless for a gratuitous, 80s-style strip club scene (for reference, see Beverly Hills Cop, Beverly Hills Cop 2, every Missing in Action movie, etc. etc.).

Oh, and the soundtrack MUST have synthesizer.  I need more synthesizer!

Seriously, I'm such an 80s whore, I can't wait for this movie.  It is going to rock.
