Stan Winston, one of the industry's most noted special effects and makeup artists who was best known for his work on such projects as the Terminator and Jurassic Park films, died Sunday. He was 62.

Winston died peacefully and surrounded by family at his home Sunday evening, after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma, a Stan Winston Studio spokesperson said.

Winston was a collaborator with such leading filmmakers as James Cameron and Steven Spielberg, and he worked on some of his generation's most memorable films.

He won four Oscars, for the VFX in Titanic, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Aliens; and for the makeup on "T2." His earned additional Oscar nominations for his work on AI: Artificial Intelligence, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands, Predator and Heartbeeps.

Winston's Stan Winston Studio created characters, creatures and monsters for motion pictures and TV.

He was one of the original founders of VFX house Digital Domain, though he was no longer with the company at the time of his death.

In 2001, he earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

God rest your soul Stan. I did not know you were fighting cancer. The world is a smaller place without you.

What a tragedy.....I'm at a complete loss. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Wow nature can blow.

Did he design ROBOCOP and IRON MAN armor?

It should have been Michael Bay.

RoboCop was designed by Rob Bottin. Bottin's good at what he does, but he's no Stan Winston. I'm pretty sure Winston was involved with Iron Man though.

This is very sad. I had no idea Winston was battling cancer either. Is there anyone in Hollywood in the last 25 years who influenced the industry as much as Winston? I'm having trouble thinking of any special effects-heavy film during his career that he wasn't involved in. This year has become a very sad year in losing talented individuals in Hollywood. My sympathies go out to his family.

This has crushed me more than hearing of any one else's death in Hollywood. Stan was a master at his craft and it saddens my heart to hear of his passing. He's not really dead. He's "battling evil in another dimension." His work stands for itself. Rest In Peace.

That sucks....Hollywood films and special effects are better today because he was alive. Your legacy will live on Stan the "Real" Man.

I got to admit the man's work pushed me into the whole Design and Motion Graphics business and gave me a TOTAL love for horror and sci-fi and movies for the better. I will miss seeing the work he could have created. Makes me mad when I think of all the talentless crap in Hollywood (like Ratner) are still going and the good guys gotta leave the party first.

RIP Stan and thanks.
