C2F just received this announcement from Marvel regarding a new cast member for Captain America. One interesting thing of note: the official name for the 2012 super team movie is now Marvel Studios' The Avengers, perhaps to differentiate it from the potential Warner Bros. franchise based on the old Brit TV series.

From a press release

Marvel Studios announced today that Oscar-nominated actor Stanley Tucci has been cast to star as Dr. Abraham Erskine in Captain America: The First Avenger opposite Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, and Hayley Atwell.  In the early comics, Dr. Erskine was a German scientist behind Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that created the Super Soldier known as Captain America.  Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce Captain America.  Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce.  The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

The movie will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Tucci’s credits include Julie & Julia, Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and The Devil Wears Prada.  He can next be seen in the upcoming comedy Easy A as well as the upcoming movie musical Burlesque.

In addition to Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel Studios most recently released Iron Man 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, and will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including, Thor on May 6, 2011, and Marvel Studios' The Avengers on May 4, 2012.

Absolutely fantastic!!!

Tucci is a terrific and credible actor.  Seeing more and more high talent actors sign on for 'comic-book movies' is incredible.  Shaping up to be a fantastic movie!

I suppose the name change matters... in some alternate earth where that Avengers is more popular.

Its bad enough The Last Airbender had to drop the Avatar moniker... I guess Brits do have a sense of humor.

Marvel Studios' The Avenger? Thats lame... Should just call it Avengers Assembled... or something like that. Im sure nobody will be confused if they just leave it as The Avengers, The Mighty Avengers or The Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes.

Tucci will be great as Erskine!  Yet more solid talent cast in a Marvel movie.  They continue to impress with their casting decisions.  (aside from the questionable casting of Evans as Cap - but I'm trying to hold judgment in reserve).  This does, however, eliminate one of the role options I had in mind for Tommy Lee Jones to play.  Not sure who else he could play now, other than one of the generals overseeing Operation: Rebirth.  Anybody have any insight on who TLJ is playing?

That title change sucks, though.  I know they want to avoid copyright issues with the old Brit TV show and that HORRIBLE movie from a few years ago with Ralph Fiennes and Uma "Horseface" Thurman, but COME ON!  I'm pretty sure that the comic pre-dates the TV show.  Or that they have at least a decent legal argument to share use of that name.  They should at least title it "Marvel Comics 'The Avengers'."  Marvel Studios doesn't have the same prestige and history that Marvel Comics does.  Or what about just "Avengers."  Rheul's idea of "Avengers Assembled" isn't too bad, either (though that one sounds more like a sequel title to me).

Whenever I hear of Tucci I think of him as Muerte(aka Morty), a bumbling hitman in Undercover Blues.  HILARIOUS

Hey Marvel... are you reading?  Good move grabbin Tucci, bad move with the Title.    Next?

It's a bit early to be locked into a title, especially one that stupid.  I'm sure it will get changed back.  I don't think anyone is going to confuse the two totally different versions of The Avengers, especially considering how poorly the British version was recieved when it was made into a film.  Not even Sean Connery could save that mess.  Besides, there are two westerns titled Unforgiven.  I don't think anyone has seriously confused Clint Eastwood's masterpiece with the older film of the same name.
