That was awsome. Just like I remember as a kid.
Better known to US fans as Star Blazers, the first full live action version of Space Battleship Yamato is set to debut in Japan in December of 2010 and the first TV commercial has debuted, which can be seen below. The franchise has had a checkered history in the US with Disney at one point working on a release but it was shelved when Michael Eisner left the company along with numerous other projects. The Yamato series served as the "inspiration" for the Bablyon 5 spinoff series Crusade at one time as well.
Space Battleship Yamato will be directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who has worked on Ballad, Returner and Always: Sunset on Third Street. The feature, which has been in production mode for several years, is being handled by TBS. The cast has been pretty well fleshed out as well at this point:

I always wanted a good Jap sci-fi movie. I hope it does well. Maybe they can get Robotech moving. They could rival Hollywood if they could get their writing out of their asses.
Oh, wow...I will definitely have to find a way to see this. I LOVED Starblazers when I was a wee lad, and I'm talking about three decades ago.

Wow!!! Maniacs,I never thought I'd see the day where we'd finally see a live action version of this...Star Blazers! I agree that it looks spectacular and in a big way,it looks like how I saw it as a kid as well as recently on youtube! Speaking of which,wrrlykam,if you still haven't seen the original animation series any of them,from The Quest to Iscandar to The Comet Empire to the Bolar Wars,you should be able to watch all three series on youtube. That's where I've been watching them. It's been nice reminicing as I've watched them for I haven't seen them for a good many years. I'm glad to see that the effects,production design,costumes,and overall visuals,looks and feels like the original. Good on them!
Whoever at Disney made the decision to abandon Star Blazers was a first class fool! I bet they or anyone else who may have had a crack at it will rue the day they let this slip through their fingers! If Hollywood ever woke up and finally decided to do an english version of this and do it right,it would be a franchise that IOM could easily rival Star Wars;especially in terms of the space battle concept. I have a possible casting for an American version IOM. I'd go with Tom Welling as Derek Wildstar,Jennifer Love Hewitt as Nova,and Martin Sheen as Captain Avatar. Before some of you go off on me and say this and that about how some of you may not see the casting choices I've made here. Just consider what the above mentioned actors have done before and the character traits they could bring to their characters.

That was the coolest thing I've seen in ages! Starblazers was my favorite as a kid. That looked beyond amazing.
Oh and keithdaniel, don't be too hard on Disney for dropping Starblazers. I've read the story treatment they intended to use if the project went forward. The horror.. the horror... They pretty much took the original concept of the series and proceeded to wipe their @$$ with it. Just for starters, the Yamato wasn't even in the movie. They were going to use the USS Arizona instead. It just went downhill from there. At least this film looks to be paying Space Battleship Yamato the respect it deserves.
So why doesn't the cast look caucasian? It would have been smart for Japan to work internationally and have a diverse cast. This will eminate some of the stench that is Power Rangers.
I guess the Americanized version by the BSG guys or JJ Abrams will hit out Netvision sets in 5 years or so.
Now this is interesting. I was saying just awhile ago that Star Blazers woulda make a good live action movie. I look forward to seeing more.
