Star Blazers, originally known as Space Battleship Yamato in Japan, has been one of the big name anime franchies over the years and one that was certainly influential on a lot of young animators and movie makers who are out in the field these days. A new live action adaptation in Japan has gained a lot of renewed interest in the property and Deadline New York is now reporting that Skydance Productions, owned by David Ellison of the Oracle family name, is in negotiations to get the TV series Star Blazers so they can make a big budget movie. Ellison is looking to get Christopher McQuarrie (currently scripting Darren Aronofsky's "The Wolverine" and was behind The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie) to handle the writing chores on it.

The description used for both Star Blazers and Space Battleship Yamato in the piece is that the series "are described as "space opera," involving alien invasions, the near extinction of the human race, and a last dash journey through space to save the planet."

This is good and bad news. If its successful, it will open the door to more anime being developed into movies.

But why bother with Yamato, when they already made it and it looks really good? Distribute the Japanese version on US screens. Then if its successful go option Gundam or Robotech and make US versions of those instead.     Low risk/high reward business.

Tevil what would you expect when they are already making an american version of the Girl with the dragoon tattoo series. It really doesn't surprise me. Japan movies with sub titles or voice acting dubs done pretty badly are in a nich market themselves so why not make another version that people can make more money off of.

make another version,  did they make another version of spider-man????? how about iron man?????

I don't think they would re shoot those movies just so they can show them to people in other countries, so why mess with the originals,

Any word on when we get Yamato?

@mudduck454 did they make another version of spider-man?????-

Um yea they are making it right now. Just like they are making another version of girl with the dragon tattoojust like the movie arthur- just like the movie death note- just like how they tried to do a live action evangelion a few years back but it fell through- just like they remade batman (which actually was really damn good) just like they did superman- and x-men- and ;;;;; well you get the idea
