SyFy Portal recently caught up with screenwriter Erik Jendresen who wrote a draft for the STAR TREK feature film tentatively called THE BEGINNING. But with executive changes at Paramount, the project has been abandoned.

Jendresen created "a story that would take place betweent the end of the series and the original adventures. He says the idea was being positioned for a possible trilogy, and would in some large part center around the Romulan Wars from Trek mythology."

He admits that his idea has few champions currently at Paramount and its future is unknown.

Thanks to Gustavo and 'Mike" for the heads up.

Can someone explain this statement to me? "A story that would take place between the end of the series and the original adventures"?

This guy Erik Jendresen who wrote a draft for the STAR TREK feature film tentatively called THE BEGINNING was going to be like this: *************************** "This would take place just a couple of years after the end of the events in ENTERPRISE but well before the original series, and it would look at the inciting incident that started everything," he states. "The story is big and epic, and it isn't as antiseptic as the television stories had to be." He says THE BEGINNING would also not be centered around the traditional STAR TREK model of a captain, crew, and starship. "We're looking at a very small group of men and women, particularly focusing on one character," explains Jendresen. "There are a couple of ships, including a principal ship, but this is not a traditional captain and crew of a starship story in the least." ******************** While I have to salute his passion to get this one going... I have to admit that I'm not excited about this at all. As much as I love Trek and have seen every episode... I don't want them to do something half-ass. A new trek would have to be a major event not the ho-hum event it has been for the last couple of series. I would like to see a series based on the Klingon Empire or Go forward 100 years and deal with the problems of a galactic invasion from one of the neighboring galaxies with technology far surpassing anything we have imagined. The series could begin with a montage of scenes such as a Borg outpost, dominion outpost, and Romulan being obliterate. The federation has to put a team together to discover what has transpired and why dealing with these shaky relationships whom don't trust the federation because no federation worlds have been attacked. Find out over the course of a season or two that it is a plot by the other galactic race to isolate the federation, whom they view as the only cohesive power able to stop the invasion. Have the 3-4 seasons deal with the crew breaking away fro

***Continued*** Have the 3-4 seasons deal with the crew breaking away from the morons in the federation government whom think that if these enemies wipe out there enemies that it would be a good thing, not realizing the ultimate plan. Breaking away means journeying between galaxies to the invader galaxy and tries to stop the invasion or reason. Season five can be where they fail and an all out galactic war breaks out, but they manage to get back in time to muster up the forces of the other major powers. Just an idea...

Thanks Wes. #7 is correct that things need to change at the top before anything will move forward. #9 I didn't hear that rumor about Singer. The problem is more than the writing, it's the staleness, it's the same formula. Things need to be shaken and turned upside down. Up until now Trek has focused on the powers in the Galaxy. There are other powers that could lead to some really interesting concepts. What if some of the new crew (in my vision) 100 years from TNG/DS9/VOY have some serious psychic powers that match the other galaxy inhabitants, wouldn't they be tempted to change sides. There's so much that can be done with a really well thought out story in the trek verse... sigh... we get pitched... the romulans (whom I do like) and another ship, another crew, another lack of urgency. Put the galaxy at risk... do something interesting... man...

Just to clear up some misperceptions. The story is the Romulan Wars, which take place AFTER Star Trek: Enterprise and before the birth of James T. Kirk. James T. Kirk is a descendant of Tiberius Chase. The Jendresen story is not dead. It's just that no decisions are being made at this time, so it's very possible when Paramount decides it wants to move forward with a motion picture, they could very easily go ahead with the existing script from Jendresen. The original story is located at www.syfyportal.com (link seems to be missing above). And this is NOT a spec script. This is a full-fledged shooting script-style draft.

Michael, Thanks for the info and the link... It seems like Erik is really passionate about this getting done. That kind of passion could make for something good. I would much rather see the trekverse move forward rather than explore the past, but that's just me. Reading this fleshed out a bit more sound a little more interesting.

It still doesn't sound like there will be any sort of Trek in the immediate future. The near future is the unknown factor here and it sounds like it all depends on what direction the new suits at Paramount wish to do. I think a 5-7 year resting period is in order. Still... it has to be Trek but something different at the same time and not in the same time period as TNG/DS9/VOY that's been beaten to death move on to a new frontier.

Lycanthrope25 that is also an interesting idea. I like Wes's expanding on it to be the Mirrorverse, which was a facinating what if scenario. I remember some of the best TNG episodes had alternate realities such as Yesterday's Enterprise and Parallel's where Worf kept jumping into a ton of different alternate realities. But, I doubt that it would fly with the suits.

Tiggericky, I cannot speak for others, but I feel that the talent of Science-Fiction writers is strong as evidenced by some extremely well-done series that are in production today. This isn't just a case of the Trek-verse being stale, it is more a case of the trek-writers having run into a roadblock because you cannot change x or y or z. What if the Federation fell or falls during the course of a series? What if the timeline moved to 100 years from VOY? What if trek focued on the Mirrorverse or other major alien race like the Klingon's or Romulans? There are many many ideas and good writers out there. I still feel that there is a lot of great Trek to be had, but I don't want the studio to rush a halfbaked idea, I'd rather they take time and flesh out a new course to run. My point being that the well may seem dry now, but the interest will be there for something good. Look at the rejuvinated Dr. Who, BSG, Stargate... I have hope.

As noble as that sounds, it's a one and out, both the actors are not going to do more than one film. It's presumptuous to say that on one wasn't to see what you described. I found DS9 to be the best of all Trek. Voyager started out good then sputtered. Enterprise started out good and also sputtered. I heard the 4th season was the best, but the 3rd season killed it for me. I want to see similar to what was done with TNG. Go forward shake the universe up and hire the best Sci-Fi writers out there. It can be done the current verse has been explored and, like they did with TNG, it's time to update.
