Star Trek & Farscape: The Complete Series

Star Trek on DVD and the other Trek worth picking up this week!

“My name is John Crichton... an astronaut. Three years ago I got shot through a wormhole. I'm in a distant part of the universe aboard this living ship of escaped prisoners, my friends. I've made enemies. Powerful. Dangerous. Now all I want is to find a way home, to warn Earth. Look upward, and share... the wonders I have seen”.
Several years ago I came across Farscape on one lonely Friday night. The episode was “Out of There Minds”. Farscape was getting a lot of great reviews at the time and appearing on every magazine including TV Guide. I thought I had better check it out. Unfortunately for me, I was completely lost. “Out of There Minds” features a story where the entire cast switches bodies. Crichton (Ben Browder) is inside Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black) and Ka D'Argo (Anthony Simcoe) is inside Pilot (Lani John Tupu) and so fourth. I had no sense of the characters so the actor’s performances were totally lost on me. The story itself was funny, mildly offensive (in a good way) and totally refreshing. Sure there was plenty of sci-fi danger and intrigue but this wasn’t Star Trek. There wasn’t a chain of command or rules and regulations to follow, it was off-the-cuff. I was hooked.
I waited for the show to be start again in re-runs and what happened next was totally unexpected. I went from being hooked to gaining an obsession for the show. Every night I had this ritual of watching the further adventures of John Crichton and the crew of Moya. What also was totally refreshing was how each episode hinged on the next. Let’s face it, you can pretty much watch all three seasons of the original Star Trek series out of order (and most of us have for decades). Farscape is a story that constantly unfolds and reveals the interworkings of all those on board. In trying to introduce others to the show, I was pointing out significant episodes to watch but quickly realized the only place to begin is at the beginning.
For those of you that don’t know Farscape here is your quick run down of the show. John Crichton is an astronaut that finds himself on the other side of the universe. A worm hole has transported him from today (circa 1999) into a huge space battle where escaped prisoners have taken control of their ship and are now on the run. John is constantly trying to find a way home but his bigger problems come from working with this diverse group of aliens. Every day problems are the key to Farscape as John and his new shipmates must not only outrun the evil Peace Keepers but find food and supplies. Their ship is totally defenseless and completely alive creating further dilemmas. Over the course of four seasons, the crew changes only slightly but their main enemies actually become members of the crew. This constantly throws off the balance and trust that those original prisoners formed. It is never easy, there is always someone that wants them dead, but this motley crew rises to the challenge time and time again. You’ll feel foolish for not watching when it was on and marvel how just how real a puppet can be.
Today is your chance to get Farscape in a complete Mega Set that includes every episode in one box (pick up the Best Buy Exclusive Edition to get the set that includes The Peace Keeper Wars). The ADV Films releases are long gone and this is your chance to either discover or rediscover Farscape. The show is really the epitome of what all great sci-fi fans want. It takes the best of what made Star Trek, Buck Rogers and Star Wars so popular and blends them together with incredible puppets and a lot of sex. Not sex with the puppets just… well watch and see because when it is all said and done you’ll never find another show that was so character driven in the realm of sci-fi. It is time for you to discover the wonder that is Farscape.
Check out my interview with Farscape stars and producers Ben Browder, Claudia Black, Brian Henson and Rockne O’Bannon here on Mania. Be sure to check out my Farscape toy column for your complete run down on those hard to find action figures, “The Farscape Folly”.

Farscape was great!  Anybody who hasn't experienced it owes it to himself to see it.

StarlightGuard 11/17/2009 12:23:54 PM

hey movielord

just tipping my tricorder at ya for adding this humble servant to your facebook recently

I joined up on the "you've got geek on you" page as well....I wish I could actually HEAR the podcasts, due to the fact they'd take about a day or two to load on a dial up connection....

of course, you could always drop by Arkansas and repeat it for me live and in person :)

and...did I read that right? sex with puppets? does this mean I can finally admit my lust for my Miss Piggy doll?

I'm a little terrified to buy it in's like that giant dancing schlong will break out of the tv and get slapped across my face....

yeah, I could've made that sound a little less exciting

Hobbs 11/17/2009 12:46:55 PM

I agree with kara, though I still think they screwed it up in the 4th season and the final Peacekeeper wars DVD...but by that time the show was getting canceled so it doesn't matter how bad it got at the end.  For the long haul of the series I guarantee you will enjoy it.

karas1 11/17/2009 2:21:57 PM

Farscape never played it safe, they took risks.  Most of the time it payed off big.  Sometimes it crashed and burned.  But it was never dull.  And even the worst eps had something in them worth watching.

Starlight, I take it that you haven't experienced Farscape yet.  Please take this opportunity to do so.  Miss Piggy doesn't appear but you may develop an unhealthy obsession with Claudia Black.  You wouldn't be the first.

I couldn't watch Farscape.  I hated that little Muppet so much I hoped they would kill him off.  He was my pick for one of the most annoying genre character of all time.

Not going to buy Star Trek no matter what.  Worst film of 2009 despite what others say.

Hobbs 11/17/2009 6:04:07 PM

Yup it took risks and the risks they took in the 4th season when they were running out of ideas ended up getting the show booted from TV.  Then they tried to tie it up in that mess of a Peacekeepers war movie and it didn't work either but at least they gave some conclusion to the show.  Again, not hating on it but I seem to have debates with fans on this issue all the time.  IT was a great show just expect it to take a nose dive during the 4th season.  That being said I give it credit for taking the chances it did because we got 3 great years out of the show.

jppintar326  I agree with you about Rygel, only in the beginningthough. there is a moment where it all changes and he becomes so very real...

wrrlykam 11/18/2009 2:09:37 AM

I hope this Farscape complete series sets get over the pond to Blighty. I hate al thouse litle boxsets they put out, 5 eps per set.

I didn't have a problem with season 4, but I haven't seen 3 and 4 since it was on TV so I'll see if I can pick up on what Hobbs' POV is on it.

Rigel for Dominar!!!!!

karas1 11/18/2009 2:29:09 AM

I think they were taking more risks in the 4th season which was the most uneven season.  It had great highs and big lows.

If the ratings for season 4 dropped at all it was probably more due to the heavy serialization.  In earlier seasons there was an arc, but most of the content of an ep was stand alone and someone who had never seen Farscape before could figure out what was going on.  Not so in season 4.  A newby would be completely lost.

I have to admit that I was a little disappointed by The Peacekeeper Wars myself.  Considering they were supposedly condencing what would have been season 5 into 2 hours there seemed to be a lot of padding.  But it did wrap things up nicely.

Hobbs 11/18/2009 7:06:49 AM

That's the only best part of Peacekeeper wars was that they wraped up everything but overall they put too much in it trying to tie up all the loose ends.  As I said in the other thread I really think they should have taken the 13 episodes sci-fi offered them.  They would have been able to tie up everything and make each episode memorable. Those 13 episodes could have been the best wrap up to a series ever.

I saw an intervew with Bannon (I think it was him) and he said Farscape comic is out that takes place right after the Peacekeeper wars if anyone is interested in the further adventure of John Crichtion.  I have to admit when I heard that makes me want to check it out.
