I still say given the description they are tying it into the Enterprise story line with the extremist group. It is political, timely and very based in REALITY. You believe everyone is going to want to go along with being buddies with aliens? Peter Weller was the give away. His character in Enterprise was the figurehead for the movement to return Earth to a xenophobic state. Sorry, I seriously believe there is no superpowered being in this, it is terrorism and thus making it more of a challenge. If it were Gary Mitchell he could just snap his fingers and DESTROY the Enterprise. Really. So how does that really make sense? It also gives Kirk and the crew something more personal to fight because this will invoke opinions and positions within the crew. Maybe I am wrong but this theory makes LOTS of sense.

I don't know lazarus, there was a pirated clip of filming released a while back...showed the villain of the movie fighting with Spock...the Vulcan nerve pinch had little, if any, effect...makes one wonder if he was fighting some random tough as nails alien, or some superhuman...can't wait to find out.
