STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME (1986)

By: Anna L. Kaplan
Date: Sunday, June 10, 2001

Before they can get home to face trial, Kirk (William Shatner), a reborn Spock (Leonard Nimoy), McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), Chekov (Walter Koenig), Scotty (James Doohan) and Sulu (George Takei) must go back to 1986 to save the Federation, by finding a pair of now-extinct humpback whales. The story, by Nimoy and producer Harve Bennett, was ably directed by Nimoy. The film is filled with humor, warmth, and banter between the characters. Catherine Hicks played Gillian Taylor, the whale biologist, to perfection. Effects by ILM, including animatronic whales, helped bring the story to life. The highest grossing of the TREK films, STAR TREK IV brought more than just TREK fans to the theater.
