Paramount has decided to shuffle around their major theatrical release schedule now that the WGA strike has officially ended, reports Variety. Their highest profile move is the upcoming Star Trek adventure getting a push from Christmas Day to May 8, 2009. Studio insiders attributed the move to financial reasons, indicating the J.J Abrams-directed "Trek" has a higher gross potential in May.

They've also moved the upcoming Ben Stiller comedy Tropic Thunder from July 11 to August 15, 2008 and shuffled Martin Scorsese's thriller Shutter Island to Oct. 2, 2008.

Variety reports these as the first three but expect more changes in the lineup for Dreamworks and other studios.

That kind of sucks,,,,but I can see why they moved it,,,May has seem to be a hot month in the last few years,,,I am partial to May as it is my birthday month...lol...The first Spiderman actually came out on my birthday, May 3rd, and I had a Spiderman party....lol,,,yeah, I'm a tool,,,,but thats ok...I am also curious about Tropic Thunder, but August tends to be a dumping ground, barring a few exceptions like The Bourne Ultimatum.

Yeah, this is a surprise. Now I have to wait more than a year! Damn! Since filming is still going on I wonder if they also prefer a delay to tweak the script and maybe even re-shoot some scenes they can now re-write.
I also wonder what it will be competing against then. Probably it will be the JLA movie. With the strike over, I'm sure they are now starting the re-writes they wanted so they can get it out by next summer.

It probly will be justice league, but I would see Trek over jla any day. JLA will have ti many characters and no balance between them.

I think they are scared of Indiana Jones. Kirk should be. hahahaah

Wow a summer movie release for a Star Trek film. When was the last time a ST movie came out in any other month than Nov-Dec? I can remeber all the way back to ST:6, not sure if too many of them have had this kind of opportunity to make alot of cash.

Didn't I read somewhere that JJ wanted to make some changes to the script during filming, but couldn't because of the writer's strike? Maybe that plays into the date changes, too, because now he'll be able to shoot some changes to the script. I'm a little disappointed at this news, but if it makes the final product better, I'm all for the setback.

Sweet, now my Comic Con poster and T-shirt really are collectors items (see date on article's picture). Though bummed at waiting 5 more months, I'm glad I'll see Trek in the summer and not the day after Xmas...

GREAT......blockbusters are better in May. Now they can re-vamp it and finally put William Shatner in it, like he should have been fron the start.

This is very interesting. It means they have faith it can do well in the summer.

However what else comes out then? Any big movies that we know?
