And in IMAX possibly.

It looks like plans have changed for the rapidly approaching production of Paramount's Star Trek sequel. While reports surfaced last month suggesting that it would be shot with 3D technology, director J.J. Abrams has revealed to MTV that they're sticking with the 2D cameras for the follow-up adventure. It will be converted to 3D in post-production. It should be noted that he knew some fears of previous terrible conversions would be brought up with the news so the director was quick to point out that he believes they have enough time to do a credible job in post-conversion.

After producing Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Abrams also revealed that he hopes to take the Enterprise to IMAX theaters this time around.

"We're shooting on film, 2D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the 'Harry Potter' movie and all that," says Abrams. "Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right, because if you rush it, it never looks good... We were talking about [shooting in IMAX] and I would love to do it. IMAX is my favorite format; I'm a huge fan."

At the moment, the confirmed cast seems to be Chris Pine, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve and Peter Weller. Both Eve and Weller are playing undisclosed parts. With Benicio Del Toro deciding to drop off the negotiations for this next installment, the search is on for someone to play the villain.

The Star Trek sequel flies into theaters May 17, 2013.

I'd rather see a Star Trek movie in IMAX over 3D anwyays.

I-Max 3D is the way to go. I don't get why they just don't shoot it in 3D, the cameras are fairly easy to handle unlike years past. Either way I'm glad they're doing I-Max 3D, best of all worlds

I'm with jackwagon.  At least this will not look terrible if I decided to purchase it for my 2D TV.

Man, in retrospect, i can't believe what JJ Abrams did with this. Rebooting the original series with very good actors and changing the timeline and winning w/ it!?!?!  It blows my mind !!!! What a G.

Not a fan of 3D anyway. So whatever. As long as they make a good movie like the first one I dont care.

The first one accomplished the impossible, it made me interested in Star Trek. I look forward to the next entry.

If its not shot with a 3D camera its not worth it. I will see this in 2D. 3D has always been over rated to me. I think it should be mostly just for cartoons. Kids like that stuff.

I think I'll go 2D, hoping for a good story and acting.  3D is way overblown, other than maybe Avatar, I can't think of another movie where it really added much to my viewing experience.

If they do IMAX, I really hope they don't make it 3D since this its post-conversion.  I would like to see this in IMAX, but I probably won't if it's in 3D, too.

M:I4 was impressive in IMAX sans 3D.  Space would probably be even more awesome.

Ahhh, commen sense wins again...shoot in 2D what was meant to be shot in 2D then convert if you want.
